In todays Echo is the Obituary of Major Ted Ruston. I had the privilege of serving with him on Bournemouth Council and he was an extremely conscienscious and hard working Councillor on behalf of the people he represented. He had strong principles and would defend them very ably.

Ted also enjoyed good humour. My seat happened to be immediately adjacent to his in the actual Council Meetings. The Council Chamber was not good for people with hearing difficulties and Ted was partially deaf, probably from his eminent war service.

He would ask me to give him a nudge when it was appropriate for him to jump up and launch into his contribution on a given subject and I can recall giving the 'nudge' at the wrong time and poor old Ted rising to his feet and booming out his speech at the most inappropriate time but he took it in good humour as did our fellow councillors who were well aware that he had been misled.

Another time he rose with an attempt to annul the charge made to use public conveniences in the Town announcing that he proposed to 'emancipate the ladies'.

Virtually all the Lady Councillors objected saying he had it wrong and the charge ensured that at least someone had to invest some money to enter a cubicle and otherwise they were open to misuse. He was quite put out.

Ted was a wonderful guy and we were lucky that he and his wife lived amongst us for a while.

RIP
