CHERRIES' in-form striker Callum Wilson has been called up to the England under-21s squad.

The 22-year-old hotshot was named in manager Gareth Southgate's 22-man squad to play Portugal next week, a matter of days after saying his chances were limited.

Wilson, who has netted six goals in his last seven games, is also on the shortlist for this month's Championship player-of-the-month award.

Signed from Coventry City in the summer, Wilson has started every league game for Cherries this term, netting 11 goals in all competitions.

He could become the first Cherries player to represent England since current boss Eddie Howe.

Wilson told the Coventry Telegraph earlier this month: “I've never played for my country at any level. I was talked about at under-19 level and was put on stand-by but I got injured so it wasn't meant to be at that time.

“I think I can play for the 21s because I was born in 1992 but I don’t think I’m in with a shout at the minute because they’ve got good players a year younger than me who are in the Premier League.”

Meanwhile, Cherries centre-half Baily Cargill has been named in the England under-20s squad to face Canada under-20s at Dean Court on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Elevated to the first team this season, 19-year-old Cargill is yet to feature in the Championship for Cherries but has starred in their run to the quarter-final of the League Cup.

England under-20s follow the Canada game with a trip to Coimbra to face their counterparts from Portugal on Monday, November 17.
