SUPER sub Luke Roberts helped fire Poole Town to the Southern League summit but boss Tom Killick played down any talk of a tactical masterstroke.

Dolphins suffered a shock when Aidan Bennett pinched a first-half lead for newly-promoted Cirencester Town against the run of play at Tatnam last night.

But nine minutes after his second-half introduction, former AFC Totton frontrunner Roberts levelled the match before captain Jamie Whisken scrambled home to secure a 2-1 success for Poole.

The result put Killick’s charges on top ahead of last night’s fixtures and, while the manager felt his side had fully deserved their maximum haul, he was quick to shift any praise towards Roberts.

“We can’t take too much credit,” said Killick, pictured. “He was our only real attacking option on the bench so it was an obvious choice.

“Luke immediately brightened up our play and seized his chance really well. He gave us that extra spark we had been looking for and again showed he has a lot of talent.

“We had started quite well and it was one of those games where we created a lot but got a little bit complacent in the final third. Out of the blue they scored which suddenly changed everything and they played with a greater spirit.

“When we’re in charge of the game like that we have to be more clinical and get ourselves in front because it is dangerous to give visiting sides something to hold on to.

“It was a good win but we won’t let it paper over the cracks in our performance. There were times in the game where we should have done better and we were fortunate to escape having put ourselves in a difficult position of our own making.”
