DEBUTANT Callum Wilson scored twice and missed a penalty as Cherries opened their Championship campaign with a resounding 4-0 win over Huddersfield.

Striker Wilson, a summer signing from Coventry, netted a goal in each half which combined with efforts from Marc Pugh and Yann Kermorgant gave Eddie Howe’s men a straightforward victory at the John Smith’s Stadium.

It was the first time that Cherries had scored four goals away from home on the opening day since 1932.

Goalkeeper Lee Camp was deemed fit following a thigh injury while new recruits Dan Gosling and Junior Stanislas were named on the bench.

Elliott Ward earned a place in the squad after recovering from a long-term knee problem.

Huddersfield were without striker James Vaughan and centre-half Anthony Gerrard due to injuries, while Adam Clayton – seemingly on the brink of a move away from the John Smith’s – was left out.

Cherries got their season off to the best possible start after less than 30 seconds.

Found by Simon Francis, winger Matt Ritchie cut inside off the right flank and floated in a cross for the unmarked Pugh, who controlled calmly before sliding past Alex Smithies.

The hosts found it hard to shackle Ritchie early on and the former Portsmouth man had several efforts, the best of which saw him pull just wide of the left post.

Camp was forced into his first save following a speculative strike from wing-back Adam Hammill, but that was a rare home effort in the opening half hour as Huddersfield struggled to break through the two banks of four.

With the home crowd silenced, Cherries twisted the knife in the 32nd minute.

Latching on to a long ball from skipper Tommy Elphick, Wilson beat Joel Lynch down the right, charged inside and slotted beyond Smithies on the angle.

The Terriers vainly attempted to hit back as Danny Ward brought a diving save out of Camp, before midfielder Oliver Norwood went even closer when he rattled the crossbar with an audacious effort from 30 yards.

Cherries effectively put the game to bed five minutes into the second period.

Following good hold-up play by Wilson, Eunan O’Kane swung in a delicious deep cross and although Pugh’s header was repelled by Smithies, Kermorgant was on hand to apply the simple finish.

Huddersfield might have pulled one back when newly-appointed captain Lee Peltier nodded Norwood’s corner goalwards, but Camp batted the ball into the ground before gratefully collecting.

A later Norwood delivery resulted in a smarter save from Camp when the visiting stopper tipped over a thumping header from defender Matt Crooks.

Moments later, it was 4-0. Ritchie was tight to the touchline when he swept in a searching delivery that Wilson prodded just inside the near post, the weak contact deceiving the frustrated Smithies.

Wilson could have completed his treble with 15 minutes to play, but after he was brought down by Smithies, the former Sky Blues hitman struck his spot kick straight at the keeper.

Well, well Shminto what do you think about that result ?? Eddie was obviously playing mind games with Mark Robbins (Huddersfield Manager) and you Shminto as all the so called injuries you were worried about played or were on the bench (even Ward back on the bench after his prolonged absence).
Terrific performance by the team and my finger nails are still intact, as at no time did I think Huddersfield were likely to come back at us and thoroughly enjoyed listening to the game on Solent with Willo comments and following the other results (silently) on final score on the red channel. Revenge sweet for last year's result and now onwards. UTC.

What a fantastic start! Well done to the team and Eddie et al.

Of course our thanks should go to our dear friend because when the Huddersfield manager read his prediction on here, something which he must look for week in and week out, he must have told his team that the three points were in the bag and to go out there and enjoy yourselves!! More of the same for our next game please!!!!!! Up the mighty Cherries

I notice elswhere that Eddie has been quoted as warning Callum Wilson he may not be an automatic starter and that he intends to rotate his squad, afyer a performance like today why would any manager think about rotating, Eddie this would be a big mistake and dirupt the balance of the team, remember the old saying if it aint broke dont fix it, I believe you have a chance of having a good season do not throw it away by being too clever, you are not Arsene Wenger and do not have the resoursces

Did Eddie Howe ignore an autograph request from you once or perhaps spilt tea on your shoe? I'm just trying to figure out what your problem with him is? Whatever he says or does your forever warning him against it, can't understand his thinking, accusing him of getting things desperately wrong, etc etc..........The other day you were questioning his training methods as we had so many injured yet, lo and behold, our 1st choice keeper is between the sticks for the 1st game of the season along with pretty much an entire 1st team squad to choose from. Just one example of many of your constant critisicms.
Here's a radical idea for you, why don't you try offering praise now and again for our manager who, incase you've forgotten, saved our club from oblivion, built a promotion winning side the following season, left us in a very healthy position in League 1, came back to finish the job and lead us into the Championship for only the 2nd time in our history, has led us to our highest ever finish in the league and has just achieved our best ever opening day result since 1932! Is that enough for you or perhaps you don't like the way he brushes his hair?

As it happened we had a strong side and the injuries were pre match hype, a excellent result and well done t AFCB staff and players.

I guess you still don't give EH much credit for his abilities as a manager: you were still unable to see through his 'pre-match hype'? I'd suggest easing off on the predictions.
And for such a lieflong 'fan,' I have to question why you were at Midlesboro instead of Huddersfield?

The goal scoring potential ( it wins games ) is terrific and we are highly likely to be around the top all season . Somebody mentioned Oxbog , you won ' t be hearing from him as I had to buy my own season ticket !

The so called excuses and lip biting praises that comes after a resounding win when a dire resulted was predicted not only is nauseating but actually insulting our intelligence.

Is that enough for you or perhaps you don't like the way he brushes his hair?
and I expect there are fairies at the bottom of your garden, of course I appreciate what Eddie has done and I do think he has a bright future ahead of him, but that is not to say I have to agree with everything he does or says, yes he did have a full squad to pick from, but we will never know if Lee Camp was fully fit or Elliot Ward was match fit had he been called upon, there are aspects of Eddies management which I applaud but there are aspects which I do not like, and that is my right to do so, I have supported the club for over 60 years and seen lot worse managers than Eddie come and go but that has never stopped my supporting whatever team is put on the field

To be honest Callum gave the ball to Yann to take pen, almost the entire travelling contingent were chanting " GIVE IT TO WILSON " which probably swayed Eddie into changing pen taker.
The result was not in danger, so why not give the lad the oppertunity to complete his hat-trick.
No harm done.!!!

Is that enough for you or perhaps you don't like the way he brushes his hair?
and I expect there are fairies at the bottom of your garden, of course I appreciate what Eddie has done and I do think he has a bright future ahead of him, but that is not to say I have to agree with everything he does or says, yes he did have a full squad to pick from, but we will never know if Lee Camp was fully fit or Elliot Ward was match fit had he been called upon, there are aspects of Eddies management which I applaud but there are aspects which I do not like, and that is my right to do so, I have supported the club for over 60 years and seen lot worse managers than Eddie come and go but that has never stopped my supporting whatever team is put on the field
Your quite right, you are entitled to your opinion but EVERY post you put on here is critical of Eddie and his tactics, player selections, information he makes public or doesn't and so on and so on. I don't think i've ever read one of your posts when you've offered nothing but praise, even after a 4-0 away win!
Looks like Lee Camp was fit as he played the whole game, took his kicks/goal kicks, and didn't signal to the bench that he was having any problems and i'm guessing Elliot Ward was match fit otherwise Bailey Cargill would've been called up.
Believe it or not i too sometimes don't think Eddie gets everything right, i've yet to see the manager that does, but i know he gets a hell of a lot more right then wrong.
Not sure what relevance there is to "fairies at the bottom of my garden", (you lost me on that one), but i do know that if you have watched the team for 60 years, ( always a lazy quote that one, doesn't make you better or more knowledgeable then me, it just means you've been watching them a bit longer then me but i don't think you get any prizes for it), then it must be pretty obvious to you that we currently have the best manager the club has ever had as the stats alone prove.

It is comments like this (called out at the games) that stops me and a lot of other decent people taking their families to the matches.
Low life people like you actually cost the team you supposedly support a lot of money.
Well said, its getting worse on this site, the Echo should cut down on the language being used even those using asterisks, and as you say its bad at the ground especially from certain sections.
Apologies to all who may have found my post in any way distasteful.
I was getting a bit carried away on the spur of the moment.

SC, enjoy your celebration! I wouldn't have described your comments as "low-life" and think some of the responses you had we're very OTT. This is football, originally the game of the working man an where you can let off a bit of steam without hurting yourself or anyone else. Devon fan I respect your right to your own opinion and voted with a positive despite not agreeing with many of your criticisms, however I womder what your take will be, if EH virtually changes the entire team for the Cup game at Exeter on Tuesday. He has enough Quality & Talent within the First Team Squad to put out a totally different team to compete successfully with Exeter and give the team who played on Saturday so brilliantly a deserved rest until Brentford at Home next Saturday. How about this for a line up :
Buchel,Smith,Ward,Ca
rgill,Harte,Fraser,M
cDonald,Gosling,Stan
islas,Pitman & Rantie. Also maybe a couple of youngsters like Mathews on the subs bench to get experience. Above team should be more than enough to cope at Exeter but ultimately the choices and decisions are Eddie's in who we trust. UTC.

Yes , and add Derby and the other so called top clubs too.
what past results have to do with it, i dont know. I am talking about this season, not a season where we finised 10th.

Do me a favour, i bet you were having us down for relegation before a ball was kicked last season, ( your usually having a pop at the club and your "fellow" supporters). What past results show is we can beat the so called "big" teams in this division and with quality added additions this season are even better placed to improve on your disparaging 10th place finish.
Yes, we lost twice to Derby, well done for spotting that one, but as i said before we also beat plenty of "names" too, that's what last seasons results have to do with this. Have i made it a bit clearer for you now?
