Dorset Sunday cricket: Old Bournemouthians lose unbeaten record

OLD Bournemouthians surrendered their unbeaten start to the season with a woeful batting collapse in Sunday’s 106-run reverse at Portland Red Triangle.

The visitors elected to bowl at Reforne and were immediately on the back foot as openers Simon Profitt (44) and Christian Brown (27) put on 77 for the first wicket. They were ably backed up by Chris Leake (49) and Oliver Whisker (28) as Portland registered 197 for six off 40 overs.

In response, opener Shanthan Godula’s unbeaten 34 was the highlight of a poor show for Old Bournemouthians which saw each batsman outside the top three dismissed for single figures, thanks largely to the efforts of in-form duo Proffitt (4-6) and Leake (2-13).

The result saw Old Bournemouthians pushed down to third in the table as new pacesetters St Georges won against Fovant, while Dewlish moved up to second with a nine-wicket thrashing of nine-man Broadstone.

The numerically challenged visitors suffered a slow start as Dewlish’s Dan Belt (2-8) took the wickets of openers James Brown and Sean Hatton (18).

Connor Tarr (29) and John Burns (23) did their best to add respectability to Broadstone’s score but their total of 117 was never likely to be enough with a depleted side in the field.

Pete Fosbery claimed the early wicket of Lewis Chutter but Quenton Miller (69*) and Tom Hewish (37*) racked up an unbeaten second-wicket stand of 88 to win the match in style.

Elsewhere, bottom club Swanage had no answer to Winton’s strong batting display and were dismissed for 129 while chasing 287.
