AFC Bournemouth star Richard Hughes: I'd pay to watch an Eddie Howe team but not a Jose Mourinho one

Bournemouth Echo: CHELSEA BOSS: Jose Mourinho CHELSEA BOSS: Jose Mourinho

RETIRING Cherries star Richard Hughes has revealed he would willingly pay to watch an Eddie Howe team – but not one managed by Jose Mourinho.

Hughes, who is pondering an offer to join the club’s backroom staff after last week announcing he would be hanging up his boots, played alongside Howe during his first spell at Dean Court and under him for the past 18 months.

And the Scotsman, who also works as a pundit for BT Sport, has applauded Howe’s style of play and added to the recent criticism of Chelsea’s Mourinho.

The Portuguese came under fire for his tactics during Chelsea’s Premier League win over Liverpool and their Champions’ League semi-final against Athletico Madrid.

Denmark boss Morten Olsen slammed Mourinho as a “danger to football” and went as far as to say his approach would “kill the game”.

Hughes told the Daily Echo: “Mourinho is an outstanding manager and a very successful one. Everybody has an opinion on what the game represents, how it should be played and how they would like it to be played so each to their own.

“I would choose to watch a team that plays the style of Bournemouth rather than the type of football that Chelsea chose to do in a couple of high-profile games. When you have the abundance of talent they can call upon, you owe the game something different. That is just my perspective.

“A quote from Xavi from a few years ago has always stuck with me and he said ‘there has to be something bigger than winning or losing because, sometimes in a football match, the result can be an imposter, there has to be a legacy’.

“The teams people will look back on and do already are the ones which play a brand of football which interests millions and gets them talking and analysing all round the world.

“Whatever people may think of Pep Guardiola, what he did at Barcelona revolutionised the game and nobody could ever get bored watching his teams. I don’t think there is a lot to learn from teams which stick 11 men behind the ball and just park the bus.

“I would pay to watch an Eddie Howe team because they play an exciting brand of football, it is always expansive and they are always looking to win the game. I know you have to be organised and you have to defend well to win games but playing a type of football that spectators want to see is a major part of being a manager. The fact Bournemouth supporters love watching Eddie’s teams speaks volumes in that respect.

“I am not surprised at how well he has done because I have known him for so long and always knew he had a vision of how he wanted the game played.

“What I didn’t know was what it would be like working under him and it took me no time at all to realise how good a manager he was. He was better than more senior managers I had played under and his teachings are what make him as successful as he is.

“As a manager, conveying your message to players is the hardest and most important part of the job. You can have all the philosophies and ideas in the world but if you can’t transmit them to the people that matter, then, frankly, they are useless.”

I would pay to watch Lallana to sign as well, not sure about Pochitino though, if he goes to Spurs who will replace him??? EH possibly ???? He's turned them down once before, but they are now an established Prem team 20 miles from his home.

I have heard that opinion bandied about and share your concern, I think EH’s popularity around B’mth would wane considerably should that ever happen. Maybe they should just do a straight swap for Tim Sherwood they could do a lot worse and he can do his own interviews.

Apologies for feeding the trolls SolentCherry but it is Monday morning and I feel the need to kick something, maybe I should get a toy cat ;-}

I hate to say this, but I am worried that if Southampton lose their manager to Spurs. of which is looking highly likely. The Saints could make a play for Eddie and jason.
.
We must remember that Southampton is only up the road and will not effect Eddie and Jasons personal lives too much.
.
Will the temptation of the Premier League be too much for Ed and Jason to turn down seeing that it is only a local move for them.
.
Food for thought folks.

Let's nip this rumour mill in the bud. Eddie and Jason have contracts up to 2016. We are no longer a selling club. The Stains are strapped for cash and would begrudgingly have to give us a fair sum as and when Lallana leaves. For them to poach Eddie and Jason they'd have to part with a large amount of compensation, far greater than Burnley had to cough up when they poached Eddie and Jason 3 years ago.
Considering that the Stains look set to lose their 'star' players over summer, they are only heading in one direction. We, on the other hand, are only looking up!
Dear 'Lincoln Based Prophet', try feeding your brain before feeding our thoughts!

Dear Mr Phil McG (Italy)
.
I had already taken into account all you have said prior to my post. .
.
However. the lure of the Premiership and the fact that it is only a local move could, and I stress could, be too much of a temptation.
.
As we all know, money - (as we all know Southampton will be able to pay more regardless of their financial position, than we can) - is the root of all evils.
.
Naturally I do hope that both of them stay.
.

More than happy to take the 30 million from whoever for lallana if he wants to leave, there are more like him, and better waiting to be unleashed from the best academy in the UK,( this also applies to Luke Shaw by the way) and of course, afcb will grovel around under the table and get some crumbs from the deal which will be forwarded in that famous red bucket. You must remember, the bucket that was passed around SMS when your little club ran out of change for the electric meter.

Some of you also seem a little confused about the finances at the South Coast Giants. Just the 15.6 million for finishing 8th (that would clear your loss and leave some change)plus all that lovely Sky money, next season we will have a war chest of £100 million plus!!!

I would also like to take this opportunity to reassure you that Eddie (I hate drizzle) Howe will remain a small fish in a small pond, no make that a small puddle. He is in his comfort zone. Poch will remain at SMS, in the unlikely event he did leave; we would go for a manager with ambition, not somebody who would jump ship after the first spell of light precipitation!!!

I think you may have forgotten the £60m you owe to other clubs and training ground costs, when a club owes that much money talks, and the money you bring in for Shaw and LaLanna would not even cover these amounts, you have a board that are not football orientated and money is the only thing they understand

You’re home from school early today MA, been stood in the corner again? Are you suggesting that Southampton is a more miserable place than Burnley, I’m sure many would agree! Anyway good for you to state you would not like one of the brightest lights in English management at your rickety club as you’re not having him!

Re:- The red bucket: I truly appreciate the cash deposited in it by Saints fans in the past but we don’t need it at the moment, so please paint it blue and send it down the road from you. Should you need it filling in the future send to DC and I will gladly contribute.

Now lets see how Hampshire CC do this season. Course Dorset is only a minor county so no opportunites for taunting on that score.

Poch will remain at SMS, in the unlikely event he did leave; we would go for a manager with ambition, not somebody who would jump ship after the first spell of light precipitation!!![/p]
Unfortunately Milton, You still owe nearly £60 million. £27 million of that is unpaid transfer monies from last season........be careful when you get adam the llamas money. The debt collectors are sat outside SMS in their Transit - patiently waiting............. .................... ....[/p]
There will also be a Russian plated blacked out SUV sat outside St Marys. Demin and Howe in the back seat waiting for that cheque to be handed over. Maybe Milton here could do the honours? mark.s

We are Southampton, we're off to Brazil !!!!! What a great season for Hampshire footie. SFC 8th, 3 England players, (would have been four but for the injury to JayRod) Eastleigh FC promoted (could soon be a local derby for you guys) Sholing win the FA Vase, Aldershot stay up even after the 10 point deduction! Now lets see how Hampshire CC do this season. Course Dorset is only a minor county so no opportunites for taunting on that score.
Yes and Bournemouth use to be in Hampshire. Aaah yes, the old, Hampshire is a sh1te hole line. Of course I agree that the West Quay Shopping Centre is never going to compete with The Sovereign Shopping Centre. I understand this Boscombe emporium of bad taste was used as a set for the Walking Dead after the producer noticed most of the customers were shuffling around the place moaning with blank expressions and dead eyes so he didn’t have to pay for film extras. Mind you, he did get them to remove the black and red football tops.

I guess you would have to agree that we do have some of the finest beaches in Hampshire. And of course you don’t have to wade waist deep in effluent like you do if you are foolish enough to try a dip in the “sea” in Dorset.

Wow, not one comment on what the article is actually about, just the normal degrading of two great local football clubs.
I think the way we play is great, attacking fantasy football, other fans love watching us too. Im sure Howe has been studying teams like Barcalona, the players he buys must have flair for the attacking game, thats why he bought TK Natt. long my it last, see where Man City and Liverpool ended up playing attacking football.

The docks that you hang around in the evenings, for whatever reason better known to yourself, do not count as a beach!

You've finally lost the plot my old son and you've got nothing left to dish out. Having a go at The Sovereign Centre???!!!! Is that it???!!! Dear oh dear!!!!
Glad to see you keeping your chin up after coming to terms with your golden boy(s) departing in the near future. Very funny seeing as only yesterday you were adamant he wasn't going anywhere. And that small change you said we would be grovelling around for? I make that £5 mill+ your going to have to give us and you better pay up seeing as your welching on all your other transfer fees! Don't make us call the administrater and the bailiffs!
Also trying to stiff us over our cut of Lallana's fee? Tut, tut! Using the same tricks as Spurs and Arsenal when they stiffed you? unfortunately for you your wasting your time. Don't know if you've heard but we're not in need of those red buckets anymore so i'll tell you what we'll do to help out, we'll paint your badge on the front and send them up to your red light district outside your ground, should get a few punters with loose change in their pockets after a bit of the other round the back of your club shop.
And so the demise starts. Looks like Eddie Mitchell's comments are going to come true, we are going to end up top dogs on the south coast. Keep clutching at straws and keep watching!...........

funny you should say that but when Lewis came off during the last home game against Nottingham Forest the way in which he acknowledged the applause kind suggested to me that he knew more about his position next season than we anticipated. I do hope that he stays but we would need to acknowledge that he deserves to consider his career like any other human being is entitled to.
