AFC Bournemouth: Shwan Jalal proud and privileged to have played his part

Bournemouth Echo: GOALKEEPER: Shwan Jalal GOALKEEPER: Shwan Jalal

GOALKEEPER Shwan Jalal admitted he had been both “proud and privileged” to have featured in Cherries’ rise from the depths of League Two to the Championship.

Jalal’s exit was officially confirmed by the club earlier today – with boss Eddie Howe having revealed to the Daily Echo in December that he would not be offered fresh terms.

The 30-year-old joined Cherries from Peterborough in 2008, helping the club preserve its Football League status in 2009 and playing a part in two promotions.

Jalal, who kept 48 clean sheets in 147 league starts for Cherries, trained with Bury last month and could also be a target for Notts County and Crewe.

He told the club website: “It is going to take a while to sink in because I have been here for six years. To leave such a great club, which will always remain a massive part of my life, is going to be strange.

“But I am proud and privileged to have played a part in its history and its rise up the leagues. When I came here, the club was in League Two and had minus 17 points, but look at it now. It is great to have that feeling.

“It has been a hard season because I have been watching a lot from the stands so have almost turned into a fan. My son is an avid fan and absolutely loves Bournemouth as well. One day, I will be able to pull out the DVDs and show him me playing for the club. It is something that will always be with me.”

Jalal, who last featured for Cherries in a 3-1 defeat at Leyton Orient in March 2013, spent time on loan this season with both the Os and Oxford United, making just two appearances.

Boss Howe, speaking to the Daily Echo when he revealed his decision not to offer Jalal a new contract, said: “Shwan has trained very hard and has been a very good professional.

“Unfortunately, this is one of the most difficult parts of my job because he has done really well and has been a great servant to the club, both on and off the pitch. He has been the ultimate professional and has been here through some really hard times and helped the club through them.

“But, at this stage of his career, sitting as a number two or three isn’t going to do him any good. He needs and wants to play and still has that desire to be a number one. Unfortunately, that is not going to be here but I still feel someone will be getting a very good goalkeeper.”

Good luck Shwan, a top keeper and a gentleman. Take note the likes of Rhoys Wiggins, this is the way to leave a football club whether through being released or transfered, you might not have attracted such vitriol if you'd conducted yourself in the same manner.

Sad news, Shwan you are an AFCB legend and will be remembered for years to come!!!

I don’t use the word ‘legend’ lightly either and know that Jalal is revered by Cherries supporters for the crucial part he played in some very dark years and will rightly go down in AFCB folklore for this.

I hope his next career move works out well for him and wish him a long, healthy and happy life. I’m sure many B’mth fans will track his progress with interest.

Thanks Shwan, TRUE legend

Totally agree Ted, Shwan was a great keeper and it was a shame how his relationship ended with us, I am still unsure how that never got resolved in a better manner.

A great shot stopper and all round keeper and a real character who is and always will be remembered fondly.

I wish him well.

Top interview on the AFCB site, from a top keeper and top bloke!!!
Thanks for the many memories, they like you will never be forgotten, and also, thanks for clearing up in part, the contract saga, as often happens, we fans know little of what goes on, and make snap judgements (wrong in your case)!! Good luck for the future, will always look to see how you're doing which ever club is fortunate enough to have you... UTCIAD

This reminds us all just how fickle the life of a pro footballer can be...one minute dropped because you will not sign an extended contract...next rumours that Leeds are coming in for you ....and the next not making the bench. So sad, he was one of the "good guys"

A good man and a fine keeper who served us well, I wish him well in his future career and thank him for what he did for the Club .The hardest part of Eddies job and one I am sure that he hates is telling players, particuarly young ones that he sees no future for them here, but as the Club progresses and standards rise it is an unfortunate necessity. There will be several more, I believe, leaving the Club as the squad is trimmed and strengthened. I am sure that the Clb will try and find them another Club, Joe is well known for the care he takes of his "lads" and the interest and help he takes in their progress /careers even long after they leave us.

A 'keeper that I recall being distinctly nervous about in his first half a season, but his rate of progress to a reliable, sound, confident player was a credit to him. All the best Shwan.

Haven't commented for some time but Shwan Jalal is one of those players I will miss. He was a rock when we needed a rock and will always be remembered. Such a shame he never ended up climbing the leagues with us, for whatever reason. All the best, Shwan. Come back some day - maybe when it all goes tits up again :O

Thanks for helping to save our club, the best keeper we have had for many years, you have been through the crap with us, you deserved to be treated better by the club.

Many clubs would do well with you in goal, my bet is portsmouth but where ever you go we wish you well.

But he did play for England (the non league team anyway), amused me the last few years how all our keepers had caps, in varying degrees. Good luck Shwan, proper servant, and held in high regard by most of us. It seems confidence took a knock when David James joined, and then who wouldn't. Onwards and upwards, never to be forgotten, one of the few who made the full journey back up. Proper legend, gonna miss you Shwan

Our best player during Howe's first spell as manager, he was better than Jason Pearce IMO.
I think that back injury set him back and he hasn't been able to recover his career from that set back. A massive shame because he was much better than Begovic and other premier league keepers I have seen down here. I also thought he was much better than Kasper Schmeik when they were playing against eachother

We will wait to see if Dipsy, Po and the other so called super stars leave 'the S/C Giants' (hoho) before next season begins, inc. Poxy. Then we may pass them en-route to the top.

Can't believe we are getting rid of the best keeper we have had in years, he is a team player, loads of experience, we should not be letting a player of his class walk away, we need strength in depth, he has so much still to offer, I will be absolutely amazed if a top championship club does not come in for him, even as a second choice to sit on bench, football is a crazy game, there are goalkeepers in the top division getting 40k a week who are only on par with jalal, I wish him all the very best, it will not be long before this guy finds a club.
