AFC Bournemouth star Lewis Grabban: Versatile full-backs have delivered the goods

ASSIST KING: Cherries' Simon Francis

ASSIST KING: Cherries' Simon Francis

First published in Sport by

STRIKE sensation Lewis Grabban reckons Cherries possess the perfect weapon to combat the Championship’s most dogged spoilers – full-backs who double up as wingers.

Despite a prolific campaign which has seen Grabban net 22 league goals, a club record in the second tier, Cherries’ top marksman admitted he had still felt the frustration of teams sitting back – particularly at Dean Court.

However, defensive duo Simon Francis and Ian Harte have helped to counter opponents’ desire to camp in their own half by providing the ammunition for the hitman’s hot streak in front of goal.

Right-back Francis, the Daily Echo-Micky Cave player of the year, has set up nine of Cherries’ league goals this season, while left-sided counterpart Harte has created five.

No Cherries player has contributed more assists than the forward-thinking pair, a statistic that comes as no surprise to Grabban.

“We have a good attacking presence on both sides and it’s great for me,” said the striker.

“Sometimes, you have a lot of possession without getting anywhere with it but the longer you keep the ball, the more tired opponents get and gaps appear as the games go on.

“It is frustrating when a team comes to play more defensively but it’s also a compliment that they are wary of being left open by our passing game.

“You have mixed feelings at the time but when you get the breakthrough it feels great because you know they have to come out and that you’ll get more space."

He continued: “I think that’s the way the game is going now, your full-backs have to be more like wingers. That’s how the gaffer wants us to play and with the way we train, we don’t have to work at it so much now, it comes naturally to us.

“Franno is very attack-minded and he provides a great outlet for us. He has the energy to get up the channel regularly and, physically, he is very difficult to knock off the ball.

“Playing with him over the past two years, we have learned each other’s game. He’s hard to stop when he drives forward.

“Both full-backs are always looking to push forward and get the ball in the box. You just know they are going to deliver something and both have been pivotal to the chances we have created this season.

“They are both very talented footballers who are gifted technically.”

It's just like watching Brazil! Not a bad system for flying full backs to copy, Franno not quite Dani Alves, but what a great season he's had. One more assist at Millwall will be brilliant!

Morning Coops!
Can't help you with the ticket but noticed you're letting the train take the strain. Are you sure that's wise with Bank Holiday rail works you might not get there until next season??!!

Luxury coach travel for me I believe that " sad pathetic excuse for humanity" DorsetBlues is the bog attendant and "vaguely amusing WUMer" Mincing @rser the cabin boy! As long as neither of them are driving that suits me! If it was down to me I'd like to leave them both tied to a lampost in Millwall wearing nothing but a West Ham shirt. I will of course be drawing the blackout curtain as we journey on the M27 through central Hampshire ;-}

Whatever happened to Pooleboy?? I think that 4-1 spanking scared him off!

I do hope that we are no too generous to Millwall on Saturday. After all it is not in our interests to see Millwall go down seeing that they are a southern based club (albeit London). They need the points to stay up - The question is - Will we take our foot off the gas ?? Or will we go for the win to keep up our momentum ??
.
Food for thought folks.

We owe it to ourselves to go for the win. We certainly dont owe any favours to Millwall, Donny, Blackpool or Birmingham, they are where they are because they haven't been good enough thus far. No doubt Millwall will be intimidating but we can handle that, if we send them down... so be it.!!!

Don’t know why you got a -1, must be some Millwall sympathisers sniffing about, surprised some of them can read?

Anyway Edster, exactly! Finish with a win whether they’re a Northern or a Southern club it matters not!

After Cookie got that coin in the face at DC: Millwall FC I sentence you to battle it out with the Swindles and Scunnys of this world in League 1 for bad behaviour!

With a bit of luck Orient will get promoted as a replacement London fixture and hopefully a replacement 6 points, job’s a good un.

Shame on you Smhinto to suggest otherwise :-(

Good to have attacking full backs but 65 goals against suggest they lack any defensive qualities?

Re the £15.3 million loss, do you still have the same red bucket that was passed around SMS during your last financial crisis? (Also used to pay the players I believe). I hope my contribution, a selection of coins collected from various holidays abroad, helped to contribute to your surge from the 3rd tier into mid table mediocrity in the 2nd tier. Thing is, is there a bucket big enough now the loss is a massive 15.3 million.?

I do sincerely hope we do win on Saturday Mr TedMacsCherrypants.
.
My post was aimed at - Do we really want another southern based club to be relegated out of the division ?? In view of the increased travelling that the Championship imposes on us seeing that it contains a lot of northern clubs and therefore increasing our travelling and costs. i.e. do we let them have the points or do we go hell for leather for the win. I do hope it is the latter.

Shame on you Smhinto to suggest otherwise :-( Regards
I do hope it is the latter. . Regards

Who’s the we and us you refer to? are you coming clean at last. We know you’re not a scout you don't live in Lincoln and obviously no degree so why not just admit everything and cleanse your troll sole at the end of the season.
Oh! and then P*ss off with your pathetic comments

And don't we get more money the higher we finish .? If that is the case , after yesterday's story , surely we could do with the funds ... Also I think since Xmas we have had the best defence in this div . I also hold my hands up concerning ELPHICK . When he first started this season I thought he was rubbish , but he completely made me eat my words . I now think he is fantastic , and is our best centre back ....

I have backed us at the tasty odds of 2/1, part of a treble.
Reading to draw at 3/1 and Brighton to reach playoffs at 9/4 .
around £150 for a fiver if it comes up.

Agreed, it would not come into Eddie's thinking. But it s very easy to take one's foot of the gas especially from the plaers mind set point of view, as our objective has already been exceeded by far. We are away from home with nothing to play for. I have seen this many times over the years, our killer instict may have diminished. I do hope i am wrong.
.
An example of this was last week when Scunthorpe went 28 matches unbeaten and then lost to lowly Exeter City simply becuse they had already achived their aim the week before by achieving promotion. i.e the momentum and motivation had gone.
.
But like I do hope we get a result.
.

Changing the subject , did anyone notice the amount of misakes (sorry mistakes) in Saturdays programme?
Matt Derbyshire printed twice on the team list, 2 different squad numbers.
Page 91 - Never get bored of fans 'signing' songs.
Maybe I just need to get out more!
Season tickets on sale before the end of May, be ready!

Looking at the post above yours, is it possible that the "scouting genius" also edits the programme ;-)

Kind regards

It is sweet that your worried about us but there's really no need to be. We have an owner that's actually interested in us so we're only going to grow as a club as the years go on and hopefully will be back playing matches against your mob soon, unless of course we pass you on your way down once your inevitable fire sale starts. We'll send the red buckets up to you and a dozen wheelie bins so you can start getting your own collection going. I've heard word that your £57 million in the red? Apologies if i've got that wrong but everyone knows you've still got £27 million to cough up in unpaid transfer fees. And no excuses when it's time to write that cheque for Lallana this Summer! We don't want those unpaid transfer fees going up to £32 million!

The Boy Scout has a Degree in English don't you know.

He was also "pencilled in" for the Ipswich game however no coment was made I assume his name was rubbed out for a real person!
