Youth sport - tennis: Samuel strikes back to win consolation prize

Bournemouth Echo: SECOND DRAW WINNER: Dorset's Toby Samuel SECOND DRAW WINNER: Dorset's Toby Samuel

COUNTY star Toby Samuel experienced mixed fortunes in his first Nike Winter National Tour Finals event held at Roehampton.

Samuel and fellow Dorset debutant Danielle Sebata both faced top opposition in the first round of the 12-and-under main draws at the National Tennis Centre.

Dorset number one Samuel, ranked fifth nationally in the age group, lost 6-0, 6-3 to third seed Alexander Groves (Essex).

Meanwhile, Sebata, who was part of the Talbot Heath School Year Eight national winners team, bowed out 6-2, 6-1 to third seed Anna Michelle Chesca (Leicestershire).

Samuel, however, excelled in the consolation event, breezing through two matches and into the final, dropping just four games in as many sets.

His form continued in the final as he took full control of the match, winning 6-1, 6-3 to claim a deserved victory in the draw.

Another tough draw saw Sebata up against it in her first consolation match. She was beaten 6-1, 6-2 by Hertfordshire’s Indianna Spink, who is ranked fifth in the country for the 12-and-under girls category.

The junior tour includes some of the Britain’s top young tennis players and provides a stern test for any juniors trying to make their way in the sport.

  •  Bournemouth teenager Adam Glynn made his debut in the prestigious Aegon GB Pro Series at West Hants on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old Dorset star was given a wild card entry into the tournament which started Monday and finishes on Sunday at the Roslyn Road club in Talbot Woods.

Glynn put up a brave fight against number eight seed Luke Bambridge before bowing out 6-3, 7-5.

Nineteen-year-old Bambridge is from Nottingham and is world-ranked 609.
