AFC Bournemouth: Eddie Howe wants to keep core of squad for next season

Bournemouth Echo: CHERRIES BOSS: Eddie Howe CHERRIES BOSS: Eddie Howe

MANAGER Eddie Howe says uncertainty over Cherries’ on-pitch destiny has had little bearing on his squad-strengthening plans for next season.

Howe wants to keep together the core of his existing playing staff, irrespective of whether Cherries are competing in the Championship or the Premier League.

An upturn in fortunes during the second half of the season has seen Cherries force their way into the play-off picture – with tomorrow’s trip to Ipswich likely to go a long way to determining their fate.

However, with the nucleus of his first-team squad already tied to long-term contracts, Howe can devote his time in the close season to weighing up possible transfer targets.

With Ian Harte agreeing a new 12-month deal at the end of last week, just four players – Richard Hughes, Darryl Flahavan, Shwan Jalal and Stephen Purches – are out of contract at the end of this season.

Asked by the Daily Echo whether the uncertainty had affected his planning, Howe said: “It hasn’t affected anything I have done because we have had a relatively small squad of players to choose from.

“We have been training regularly with 18, 19 or 20 players and, with several out on loan, we have trimmed the squad so regardless of which division we are in, I would want that core group of players with us next season. Nothing has affected any decisions on contracts and other things but transfer targets may change.

“I want to keep together the squad because, from my perspective, I am very happy with it. I am happy with the balance and the attitude of the squad so I won’t be looking to make too many changes.

“I also want to try to keep the feeling in the group the same so think a lack of change would be a good thing. You would like to add one or two bits of quality to potentially make it even stronger for next season.

“But I have always been a firm believer in trying to maximise the squad you have rather than recruit from outside of it. Sometimes you can be very quick to move into the transfer market and bring in a whole host of players and then find you haven’t improved your squad at all.

“I really do believe in the group we have here and it is our job to try to improve those players to make sure they progress with us. If not, then of course you would look to recruit from outside but it is certainly not in my nature to go out and bring in too many.”

That's good news. Although I suspect (& am perfectly happy with) it will be Championship faire served up at Dean Court for 2014/2015.

As far as ipswich are concerned, we came up here, Suffolk, after the Wednesday game to spend Easter with relatives. The local media are buzzing about play offs just as much as we are. Perhaps with a hint of frustration after the Watford game !

Safe journey to anyone traveling and see you at the game.

Who will replace Grabbs tomorrow?

Good luck one to and all for the long trip east today, sadly for me fourth Easter in a row on call out so un able to travel ,nothing but a win today will suffice to keep our slim chance of a playoff position alive ,yes I am still dreaming as mathematically it is still on ,could my prediction of a win at millwall to secure sixth position still be alive at 5 pm let's hope so

What leads you to believe that grabbs is out? Regards the squad, priority has to be for at least one back up striker. We could probably offload pitman to yeovil, where he would do well for them in div 1, and tk back to malmo (I'm afraid). Pugh and fraser become ineffective once they realise the defender has the measure of them and i certainly don't like the way fraser goes to ground so easily. However, daniels can play in the more advanced role and i suspect smith also. Certainly there is a good nucleus there.

Quite agree with Wilkie on his comments. What about Coulibaly?. I would settle for Championship next season, as it has still been an amazing season, to finish between 7th to 10th. Well done EH & JT & co.

I would rather keep most of this squad than signing some of the ex -premiership players knocking around at the moment bit concerned about Nigel Pearsons comment which Eddie seemed to agree with still were not there just yet cant wait for Forest on Saturday whatever happens today . Coulibaly if Grabbans not fit seems a good idea and Harry back of course

Yes we have had an excellent season and we have nothing to complain about.
.
Unfortunately we cannot ship certain players out at the end of the season due to them being under contract, unless of course somebody offers a fee for them. Even Stephane Zubar is still under contract for next season, although I would imagine that Jalal will be released, Flahaven may well be kept on as an experienced back up keeper. Purchase’s playing contract will have expired but will be kept on as a coach. Tubbs I would imagine will be sold on, Addison the same if someone offers a fee. Perhaps the club will consider a deal to part pay up the contracts to get them off of the books.
.
The thing to be wary of next season is the well known ‘second season syndrome’ of which has affected a number of clubs over the years that have achieved promotion to a higher league. It is where the euphoria of promotion has worn off and the true weight of the division bears down on you. However, Eddie is far from stupid and is no doubt aware of this and will strengthen the squad where he sees fit.

Here’s to a successful season for 2014/15.

it would seem the "euphoria of promoion" wore off fairly early going by our poor first half of the season. I think our current run of form is a better predictor for 2014/15.

I would expect to see as many as 7/8 players on the peripheral of the team leaving the Club this summer, leaving room for Eddie to bring in 3/4 quality players and leaving space for young talented players to come through from the Youth Programme , Matthews, Cargill etc. giving Eddie a squad of 20/22 quality players and the Development squad to draw on.. It will be intersting to see what develops - though given the way Eddie works, he no doubt has identified the players he would like to bring in. But we still have 3 games to play this Season, so good luck to the team in those, it would be great to end the Season on a winning note, starting today!.

You dont seem to keep up with news or watch our matches.
Grabbs has been playing with a injured groin strain the last 3 matches.
muscle strains are often attributed to a failure to warm-up properly or a player being asked to play when a previous injury has not repaired sufficiently.
He needs a rest.

So what would be your reasoning for Chelsea losing to Sunderland last weekend. Even the best teams come unstuck at some time or another.

win or loose this afternoon been a great season and predict we will carry on in the same style next season.
We had some early major wobbles with humiliating defeats but have grown into this level very well thanks to good leadership from EH and JS not to mention Mr Denmins backing.
Would not like to predict this afternoons result, we are due a bounce back after indifferent results from the last two, however the "Tractor boys" would have done their homework and close us down, need to get our passing game back on par.
Whatever we will give them a good fight!
