Poole Stadium: Ex-Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell unveils plans for Poole Town and Poole Pirates' shared arena

Bournemouth Echo: PLANS: Former Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell PLANS: Former Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell

EDDIE Mitchell is confident that a brand new Poole Stadium would give football and speedway in the town “room to grow” after unveiling his vision.

The former Cherries chairman, who in December acquired a two-year majority share option in Poole Town, is hoping the Southern League side and Poole Speedway can be contained at the Wimborne Road site.

Revealing designs exclusively to the Echo this afternoon, Mitchell admitted there would be no place for Poole Greyhounds, who he had originally hoped to house under the same roof.

The Sandbanks-based businessman is targeting a minimum 6,000-seater arena which could rise to 10,000, with the facility set to include a football pitch, speedway track, sunken pits, nearly 500 flats, shops, restaurants, bars and parking.

Mitchell’s plans will go on display to the public on Friday, May 9 at Seven’s Boatshed restaurant in Poole Park and he believes his proposals present great opportunities for all parties.

He told the Daily Echo: “My vision is to get the football back to where it was and keep the speedway and make it a development worthy of one of the main gateways to Poole.

“This is an arena that will sustain a decent level of football and if it’s hosted right and run right, I think it’s a situation that would give both the speedway and the football room to grow.

“There is a strong following for both clubs and it’s just a win-win situation for everyone – the local authority, the developer, the football club and the speedway – on one of the best sites left in the borough.”

Mitchell, who estimated that the project would take a minimum of five years, admitted that logistical concerns meant he did not see greyhound racing as a viable part of his proposals.

He said: “A greyhound track pushes the width out and you push the spectators away too much and it doesn’t work, so something had to be sacrificed.

“Now I need to win various people over to let me take this further – the leaseholder of the stadium, the local authorities and the planners, and I need to find a developer to take it on, but those hurdles are not insurmountable.”

Poole Town vice-chairman Chris Reeves admitted that the club would realise “a dream” if they were to move into Mitchell’s proposed facility.

The now Tatnam-based Dolphins were kicked out of Wimborne Road in 1994 and are looking for a ground that would allow them to progress up the footballing ladder.

Reeves said: “It’s potentially a dream come true and it would be fantastic to return to our spiritual home. The development would be a real feature of the town and it could be iconic.”

Dolphins had a ground grading inspection on Thursday and are now awaiting the Football Association’s findings.

Following recent upheaval, the club needed to meet the C grade required not only to compete in the Southern Premier play-offs, but also to remain in the division next season should they not earn promotion.

No doubt boy wonder Mitchell Jnr will end up at Poole Town as Director of Football over seeing a glorified pub team. What a joke you are Mitchell. At DTFC you tired to get planning for Hotel, bars and flats. At AFCB you did exactly the same and surprise surprise he you are trying the same at Poole Town.
Maybe you could explain to the Echo at the same time as your big unveiling why Seven Developments has taken down the website and all phone lines are cut off.

Have to totally disagree with this one, the only improvement he made at AFCB was construction based, he sold the entire team from under Eddie Howes nose the first time around which forced the great Manager out, Mitchel installed his family members to manage the team leading them downwards , the Russian then ploughed in loads of cash to get the manager to return, the team was rebuilt and is currently being well managed - the success on the field is based on the manager !

As for being financially stable , sorry but this is cobblers , if Mitchel has done so much then why is the club still blacklisted ? Why is Mitchel banned from the Stadium? Why does his box remain empty ?

Because the financial state was not good and the Russian had to mop it up in time for the end of the financial year , it was decided that this would be kept under wraps so it didn't send out any negative vibes across the financial avenues such as advertisers etc etc .

Not suprised that the grey hounds will cease as this is already happening up and down the country, Stadia UK will be aware of that

Completely right!! Had Maxim not come on board, AFCB would be dead in the water. EM has to be thanked for getting Maxim involved without a doubt, but I for one will never forget how he was SO close to completely destroying our beloved football club!!! Why not just wait until the plans are displayed on May 9th before condemning the idea which may well be a good one. The greyhounds has a very poor attendance record, so if this gives PTFC a chance to have a stadium again then so far it looks like a good thing, Poole stadium certainly needs improving so why does it matter who is behind the idea, there seems to be a lot of anti Eddie Mitchell rhetoric rather than any positive thought about Poole.

This "sport" is responsible for the death of tens of thousands of dogs every year, both through horrific injuries sustained during racing around too tight bends at high speeds & also through their destruction when they are no longer deemed profitable to keep due to injury or just getting slower! A greyhound's racing career starts at around 18 months of age & is finished typically by the age of 3 years. A greyhound's natural lifespan is around 14 years. There will never be enough homes for all the thousands of surplus dogs & so the majority are killed; if they are lucky by a humane method, often not, as this costs the owner, to spend money on their unprofitable dog!

Common methods of killing a dog including shooting them through the head, drowning or dumping the poor, terrified animal on a motorway to be hit by a car, among other barbaric methods. Often dogs will have their ears cut off first, so that they cannot be traced back to their owner by the identification tattoos in their ears. Some dogs are shipped abroad to be forced to run & live in horrific condtions, often with already sustained injuries.

That is if the dog makes it into racing. Thousands of puppies are over-bred every year & obviously not all of these will make it into racing. These surplus puppies are culled before they even make it to adult-hood! Only one in four puppies that are born will reach their fourth birthday!! Those that do have a short career in racing are often kept in appalling conditions, being muzzled & kenneled for 23 hours a day and the so-called self-regulation of the industry does little to prevent this.

Greyhounds are also commonly used for dissection as training at vetinary colleges or bleed to death as donors for treatment of other pet dogs.

All greyhounds, even the lucky ones that do find a retirement home, suffer. They often have injuries & arthritis which cause them pain due to the stress put on their limbs from racing around poorly designed & maintained tracks.
