AFC Bournemouth: We dropped below our recent standards admits boss Howe

Bournemouth Echo: MANAGEMENT TEAM: Eddie Howe and his backroom staff at Wigan yesterday MANAGEMENT TEAM: Eddie Howe and his backroom staff at Wigan yesterday

MANAGER Eddie Howe admits Cherries can ill afford to dip below their best Championship standard as they bid to compete in the “demanding” division.

Howe felt Cherries had been punished for failing to hit top form when they were condemned to a 3-0 defeat by high-flying Wigan at DW Stadium yesterday.

Both teams went into the clash on the back of decent runs but Uwe Rosler’s men continued their play-off push to halt Cherries’ four-match unbeaten sequence.

Marc-Antoine Fortune fired the Latics into an early lead as the hosts dominated the first half, before Elliott Ward’s own goal doubled the advantage on 57 minutes.

Cherries created chances in the closing stages, with Tokelo Rantie and Lewis Grabban going close, but Jordi Gomez completed the scoring with a long-range strike.

Howe told the Daily Echo: “You need to be at your best against every team in this division.

“You didn’t see the best Bournemouth team (against Wigan). We had four or five who were just slightly off their peak and it showed in the performance and result.

“The challenge is for us to make sure the players realise that they can’t have a bad day. We can’t as a team. We need to be at our best to get positive results at this stage.”

Providing his overall opinion on the game, Howe said: “It was disappointing from our perspective. I didn’t think we hit the standards that we had done in recent weeks. In terms of possession and how we had passed the ball, we had been really good. Against some good teams, we had performed ever so well.

“But we just couldn’t get our passing game going, especially in the first half. We came under pressure and gave away the ball in bad areas against Wigan’s high press. It took us a half to deal with it but once we did, we were good in the second half and we had some good chances.

“We were much improved when the subs came on but, unfortunately, we couldn’t get the goal we needed to turn the game at 2-0 down.”

Howe added: “We have had a really good period of results against some difficult teams and we have had a consistent run of performances, which is the most important thing. This was the first one where we dropped below the standards we had set and we have to try to get back on and produce another consistent run.

“The league is demanding and it was another tough away game for us but we have to look forward to Tuesday now and try to get this out of our system.”

Substitutes Rantie, Marc Pugh and Brett Pitman staked their respective claims to start when Cherries host Burton Albion in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

Howe said: “TK, Marc Pugh and Brett Pitman are all good players in their own right and they made a massive difference. I was really pleased with them and they have certainly given me food for thought ahead of Tuesday’s game.”

worse case scenario this week is a shock exit from the cup and losing to a resurgent Watford under the new Manager but i am backing us for two wins.Looking at the league table it is only Barnsley,Yeovil and Doncaster that have not experienced some sort of revival so we cant afford to be complacent

I think that last paragraph says it all , Eddie is not thinking like many of us on here . It says to me he is putting his faith in rantie and Pittman . So he will not be getting in another striker .... Let's just hope his faith in those 2 prolific goal scorers doesn't cost us this season ...

I think we all fail to realise that Eddie knows the teams weaknesses and will attempt to address them in this window. He is already trimming the squad but loaning out or letting fringe players go and I will be surprised if there are not one or two additions by end of the month. Eddie is calm enough not to panic buy. Other clubs know that AFC now has some funds will ask silly prices. Need to look hard for those 'bargain' buys. A loan of an experienced Premier League fringe player would be ok until the end of the season.

Your post is spot on and makes a lot of sense.

He is an intelligent and astute manager deserving all the support that we can give him. Many a manger have failed even when they brought in players left right and centre. I believe that his priority is to motivate and make the current squad better and adopt to this very difficult league.

Rantie should definitely start Tuesday, he hasn't played a lot of football recently and it is the perfect opportunity to get in the goals and build some confidence.

I read that completely differently.

I thought he was referring to the starting line up for Tuesday. He'll deffo be looking at strengthening the attack.
If he can't get a sensible one in January, he'll get a loanee.

If we manage to overcome Burton , which is by no means a certainty ( some of you airheads think differently ) , it will be interesting to see how we cope with Liverpool , who won 5 - 3 at Stoke today . Of course it depends what sort of team Brendan Rogers , whom I know personally , puts out . If we concede first it will open the floodgates and without a big man up front , we will be unable to penetrate their back four / five . Steven Gerrard tells me that the squad are really hoping we win , as they " do like to be by the seaside ! " . Make sure you read this post properly before replying , you nincompoops . ( Notice the improved spelling ! ) .

That's how I read it to, the thing is that Nat1234 continually posts about Pitman & Rantie not being good enough, not saying I disagree just that it's his/her favourite subject!!!

Having been at the DW Stadium yesterday if we play so lethargically and just pass the ball about until we lose it we won't be beating Burton to meet Liverpool.

We need to focus on outplaying Burton in every department regardless of what team EH sends out to do the job. High tempo and energy will be the key.

What a pity there is no comment by EH in appreciation of the c272 fans who made the long journey yesterday to witness a team play..off the boil.
Watched Leon Clarke several times -a really useful player and difficult for defenders to handle -straight and direct. Wonder if another club is monitoring him as he's handed in transfer request. A proven goalscorer- I bet he won't be going to a Div1/2 team!

Looks like Wigans Dicko has agreed to sign for Wolves, which presumably will see them cooling any interest they may have had in Wes Thomas.
We may end up with him staying at this rate!. I still reckon we should have snatched at Swindons offer when we had the chance.

No, just back from Sudan, enjoying being back in Kenya. Great to see we have had some good results lately.
Guess EH was trying to work out what team to pick for tuesdays cup game.
Fantastic to see both teams have the chance to play Liverpool at home in the next round.
