Darts: Mitchell bows out at Lakeside

Bournemouth Echo: DEFEAT: Scott Mitchell DEFEAT: Scott Mitchell

DORSET’S Scott Mitchell bowed out of the Lakeside World Darts Championships – but not without a fight.

Bransgore’s Mitchell, the tournament’s 15th seed, eventually lost out to Yorkshire’s James Wilson 4-2, having fought back from 2-0 to level the second-round clash.

Wilson, though, now one of the favourites for the title after the loss of big guns Tony O’Shea and reigning champion Scott Waites, showed his class to see off the Dorset county ace in the evening’s final match at Frimley Green.

The Huddersfield marksman stormed into a 2-0 lead, showing the finishing prowess that had seen him see off former world champion Christian Kist 3-1 in the first round.

But ‘Scotty Dog’, who had edged a thriller against Paul Hogan 3-2 in the first round, found some form to level the match 2-2 and set up another nerve-jangling finale for family and friends who had travelled from Bransgore to the Surrey venue.

Wilson, though, proved too strong when claiming the fifth set and showed his experience to hold his nerve and complete a 4-2 victory in the night’s final match.

Although Mitchell matched Wilson’s check-out percentage of 37 per cent, the difference in the scoring proved crucial, with the second seed’s three-dart mark at 92 per cent compared with Mitchell’s 89 percent.
