AFC Bournemouth: Result was my main concern says Brett Pitman
In a lively second half, Pitman was felled by Jean Beausejour but saw his resultant spot kick saved by Scott Carson.
The Cherries frontman was then clattered by Callum McManaman in an incident which saw the Latics substitute sent off.
But despite being involved in most of the afternoon’s talking points, last season’s goalscoring talisman was keen to discuss Cherries’ resolute display against one of the Championship’s big guns.
On McManaman’s red card, Pitman said: “I thought he caught me quite high but whether or not it was a sending off, I’m not sure.
“I would have to see it again.
“But even before that, I don’t think they had that many shots on target. We worked hard on our shape and that showed.
“It was a good result and, especially after last week (6-1 defeat at Watford), it was important to bounce back. We worked hard for our win.
“We learned from our mistakes and showed discipline throughout the whole team.
“They were going to have a few balls bouncing around the box at the end of the game but I wouldn’t say we were hanging on because we were quite comfortable.”
Meanwhile, on seeing his penalty saved, Pitman added: “I was disappointed not to score but these things happen and I will take the next one unless I am told not to.”
