Cherries: 'Combative' Arter has matured says Howe
7:00am Friday 1st March 2013 in Sport
By Ian Wadley
CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe has resisted the temptation to condemn Harry Arter for his poor disciplinary record – but has urged the midfielder to tread carefully in future.
Key player Arter will miss Cherries’ next two matches after collecting his 10th caution of the campaign against Coventry City on Tuesday night.
The Londoner, who has made 33 appearances this term, is set to sit out his third and fourth matches of the season through suspension after being hit with 10 yellow cards and one red.
Arter, who has often come under fire from supporters for his scrapes with referees, missed no fewer than six games due to bans last season after collecting three separate suspensions for totting up 15 bookings.
But Howe, speaking from his experience since taking charge, feels Arter has matured and insists yellow cards can be an occupational hazard.
The Cherries manager told the Daily Echo: “Harry goes through a lot of work in midfield. He is a combative player, he tackles, he wins back the ball for us and I think his regain statistics are excellent.
“With that type of aggressive play off the ball, sometimes you are going to get your timing wrong and, sometimes, you are going to pick up bookings for fouls.
“The bookings that would disappoint me would be dissent but wholehearted and committed players who pick up yellow cards through mistiming of tackles, I don’t think can be, in any way, criticised. I think that is part of the game.”
In previous seasons, Arter has been criticised for showing dissent towards referees’ decisions.
Howe said: “I can only go by what I have seen this season and I have been pleased with his response. I think he has matured and he is more responsible now.
“But it is something Harry is going to have to continue to monitor and manage because we want him fit and available for as many games as possible.”
Eunan O’Kane started alongside Arter in central midfield against Coventry, with Shaun MacDonald and Richard Hughes in contention to feature at Leyton Orient tomorrow (3pm).
Howe added: “Before his injury, Shaun MacDonald was outstanding for us. Richard Hughes, whenever he has played, has also been excellent.
“It is a disappointment for Harry being suspended but an opportunity for someone else.”

His mouth gets him into more trouble than his feet.
He doesn't tackle well, is blinkered, doesn't close down well and consistantly gives the ball away.
We can ill afford a team member who runs around grizzling and kicking people when we have 2 far superior and experienced midfielders twiddling their thumbs on the bench.
In Eddie we trust but sometimes mate you need to sit in the stands and watch his OVERALL performance for 90 mins.
He's not very good.

For me, Arter has certainly shut up far more than he used to, although there is still more work to be done on keeping quiet. Let's face it, if anyone was going to get into trouble against Sheff Utd. it was Harry, in fact there was an incident right at the start of the match where they quite obviously targeted him to rile him up. It DIDN'T WORK!!! He kept his cool, along with other incidences where he walked in the opposite direction, leaving it to others to say their bit. I had kept a close eye on him, because I half expected him to find himself sent off, so was delighted with his attitude, not to say there is not still room for improvement....

He is without doubt one of the most talented players we have within the squad, but some tunnel vision 'fans' just cannot see it.
He has worked hard on his dissent, but it's not something you can change overnight.
People are criticising him but then demanding a more combative midfielder - what do you want?
We are getting bullied by teams so lets put it about a bit ourselves and if we pick up a few bookings along the way then so be it.
I do agree the dissent ones are silly, but the Coventry booking I thought was unjust as Arter won the ball and it was only their girly, whinging midfielder that got him booked.
This was the same Coventry player who had been continually swearing and shouting at the East Stand linesman......that went unpunished.

Mcquoid blows hot and cold and seems to bottle 50/50 tackles but a good player.
My point about Arter is that we have better midfielders on the bench. especially away from home. As i'm off to Orient on saturday I'll be interested to see the difference, tho Harry generally plays better away from home for some reason.
Am sure i'll see you at Brisbane Rd.

I think someone raised yesterday the point about Gerrard and the number of passes he misplaces by trying to make each one a decisive one, Arter is very similar.
There are times though when you can hear the crowd hold their breath when he loses the ball and runs after the opposition to get it back - I know I do!

He never hides and always wants the ball, I believe there are very few fans that can't see all the good things he does, must be doing something right cos Eddie picks him every week when available

I feel the main concern is not whether Harry Arter is playing or not, as we have MacDonald and Hughes to fill in, but the fact that we have drawn blanks up front in the last 3 games.
Once the forwards are firing on all cylinders again we'll be fine. Let's hope they find their form again starting tomorrow.
Up the Cherries!!

Are you saying from the 90 minute games that you've seen your better informed to judge a players ability then our manager? I've said before that i like Zubar but you think he's better than Cook,Elphick and Addison? David James was one appearence away from triggering a seasons extension, taking him up to 43 years old,not really building for the future with that one wouldn't you agree? Eddie seemed to like Donal when he first came back and spoke positively about him but now he doesn't even make the bench. The guy's got all the skill in the world but seems to have an attitude problem, for my money doesn't seem that bothered when playing in the past and certainly doesn't work hard to get the ball back when losing possesion not to mention not even making the coach for an away trip back in the dark days of Groves and as for our 2 Dutchies he obviously didn't fancy them, saw them in training and wasn't keen, that's a managers perogative.Yet i bow to your superior knowledge,Eddie's got it so wrong so far that we've risen from 4th bottom to top and currently sit 4 points off the pace.Thank God your not running the team!
sorry Eddie but his record speaks for itself, there are certain areas of our play you need to crack down on, the number of penalties we give away for a start, the bad habit of freezing players out, Zubar, James, McDermott, the 2 Dutchmen are all examples, this should not happen to any player

Laugh at the comment blaming Eddie for conceding too many penalties : he isn't playing the two biggest culprits of James and macdonald, while Tuesday was a freak: a free kick that should have gone to us and then a freak ball to hand incident !
We are so lucky to have Eddie here

The constant in the midfield pair is Arter so i think you'll find he's a bit better then "average". I admit i think he's looked a bit jaded recently but then so have others with the 2 unfortunate injuries that seem to have sapped a little bit of confidence out of the team but hoping this is temporary and normal service will resume at Orient tomorrow. Your right,Eddie does like Harry, not surprising seeing as he's the one who picked him up from Woking,so if he's good enough for the manager he's good enough for me.
EH has written more articles about Arter than anyone else. He has a special place in EH heart but to the majority of the fans, he's average and McDonald is a better partner for the truly gifted O'Kane. Why he has to keep defending Arter is a mystery. It proves to me that Arter is not good enough and just a squad player at best. Up the cherries!
