STUDENTS are being urged to think about fire safety in rented accommodation.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service campaign Student Fire Safety Week will take place between this Monday, October 23, and Sunday, October 29.

The service's education for all manager Yasmine Ellis said: “With all the excitement and opportunity that university life brings, fire safety might not be at the top of your list of priorities.

"However, in amongst all the studying and socialising, taking a few moments to think about your accommodation, how you use it and what you can do to reduce any fire risks.”

Firefighters have urged students not to leave cooking unattended and take extra care when cooking with oil, not to cook after drinking alcohol, especially late at night, keep candles away from flammable surfaces or material that might burn, and not to overload plug sockets.

Electrical equipment such as chargers, hair straighteners and blow dryers should be switched off when not in use.

Students are also advised to make sure they know all escape routs from their homes.

Yasmine said: “Each and every university or college has a person responsible for fire safety.

"If you spot a fire risk or have any concerns then you should speak to them.”
