AUSTRALIA national boss Mark Lemon admits Darcy Ward is in the "best possible place" after the injured star returned to Britain.

The 23-year-old, who suffered spinal damage while riding in Poland on Sunday, had been based in a Zielona Gora hospital since the accident.

But Pirates asset Ward was transported 40km north-east to Babimost and then flown back to UK shores on Thursday.

Ward is now based at an unnamed venue and Lemon says the next course of action will be known once the Queenslander has been assessed.

Lemon told the Daily Echo: "It's a huge relief to have Darcy back home. We needed to get him to a proper spinal unit to be diagnosed correctly so he could start the rehab as soon as possible.

"An insurance company from Australia organised the flight and there was a bed for him in Britain so we were able to get him from A to B quickly, which was fantastic.

"He will be assessed here and then we will know more following that. I imagine he is going to be in some sort of rehab for a little while but we will assess the situation as it develops.

"For now, we've done all we can to get him to the best possible place and it's over to the hospital now."
