EYE-CATCHING new recycling bins have been installed on Bournemouth seafront.

The bright green can-shaped bins are part of a scheme aimed at boosting the number of cans collected for recycling, which has been launched in partnership with Bournemouth council and national recycling programme Every Can Counts.

The containers have been placed across the Coastal Activity Park in an attempt to encourage the 4.5million holidaymakers who visit the town every year to recycle the canned drinks they use to stay cool at the beach.

The summer season typically sees increased littering on beaches throughout the area as the high volume of tourists flock to the seaside to enjoy the sunshine.

Executive director of Every Can Counts Rick Hindley said he hopes the initiative will increase the amount of cans being recycled.

“Peak holiday season is now in full swing and with it comes an increased number of people enjoying cold drinks,” he added.

“These new bins are designed to support the additional recycling services in place and encourage more people than ever before to recycle whilst enjoying the sun, sea and sand this summer.”

In previous years recycling efforts have resulted in more than 400,000 cans being recycled from beach recycling points, which is enough to stretch more than 17.5 miles – and the partnership is hoping to improve on this number this year.

Every Can Counts works with organisations across the UK to improve the recycling of cans used outside the home, specifically workplaces.

The programme provides practical advice and support for its partners, including branded collection containers and free promotional materials.
