Winter Gardens showcase: proposals for new hotel, flats and leisure scheme to be unveiled

PROPOSALS: The former Winter Gardens site

THE developers behind new proposals for Bournemouth’s former Winter Gardens site will unveil their vision at a public exhibition this weekend.

Residents are invited to the Royal Exeter Hotel between 12noon and 5pm on Saturday to see details of the planned new hotel, leisure and residential scheme.

They will also be able to discuss the proposals with members of the project team.

Mark Gilpin, planning director at Inland Ltd, said: “We are very excited to be showcasing these exciting new plans. Over the last few months we have been working very hard to develop new proposals that can maximise the potential of this site.

“We very much hope that local residents can come and see what we have to offer. Some of the new proposals will, we think, make a huge cultural impact to the area and we are very excited about this opportunity.”

It is almost a year since the previous planning application for the site, submitted by a different developer, was refused by Bournemouth’s planning committee.

Councillors ruled the scale and design of the proposed eight storey hotel, combined with the overall scale and bulk of the proposed development, would have an adverse impact on the special character of the Winter Gardens site and nearby properties in Cranborne Road.

They also criticised a lack of detail about the design, which they said led me to fear the scheme would not be of the desired quality.

An appeal was originally lodged against the council’s refusal but this has now been withdrawn and the council asked to consider the new application instead.

The height of the hotel has been reduced by two storeys in the new application and developers say it will now sit under the tree canopies of Cranborne Road.

Hurray! Another 'leisure complex' to be unveiled, then changed a little, then silently dropped until the next idea comes up. All the while, nothing gets built

So let's all try guessing what the 'artists impression' will look like...............

A collection of various sized glass box 'Imax' type plain buildings, a handful of trees scattered about in the endless paving and a few token humans (under thirty and stick thin of course) scattered about in a picture topped off with a nice blue sky.

Or is that the proposed complex across the road?

HoldenWorther, whilst you are more entitled to YOUR opinion on this forum, please afford other people the same right to comment how they seem fit.
Speaking for myself and not for other people, I WAS born here more than a few years ago, so have seen the mess Bournemouth has become with Councillors voting different project's that suit themselves and different partnerships, giving away our land IE car parks, when once all have been given to the developers, where are the people who come to Bournemouth to spend their money going to park, certainly NOT in the town centre, so they will cease to come, end of story!!!.
I will not bore you with details, such as pulling down Winter Gardens, compulsory purchase of Garages and Hotels to accommodate the BIC, who then built a 25meter length swimming pool with Wave making machine, daft should have been at least 50 meters with high boards as Pier Approach baths used to have so then our youngsters would have had somewhere to train and maybe International galas bringing in money but no.
Is it not right that we have the right to voice OUR OWN Opinion whist you are right to disagree with our opinion, I for one cannot wait for the next elections when we get the chance if possible to vote these self opinionated people called Councillors out of office, to bring in people who WANT to make a difference to Bournemouth with good idea's rather than same old thing ???

Why not build a bus station, a bigger car park, or generally something vaguely useful? There are already two new hotels going in right next door, and what with all the students accommodation that's gone in along the Wessex Way and the Lemon Building (sorry, Citrus...), surely provision ought to be made for getting all these people in and out. They aren't all going to cycle as the council seems to think.....!

Slightly off topic but can the Echo find out what is happening with the Licet scheme as there doesn't appear to be any activity on the site to suggest that anything is going to be built any time soon.

For goodness sake be patient it's only thirty seven years since this prime Licet site became a flattened building plot, these things do take time you know. Did you actually believe Licet when they said they were starting this spring?

or was it that John Beasley said they wouldn't actually do any more than the legal minimum to keep the planning alive and since the majority on here wouldn't trust JB as far as they could throw him, the logic was that LIcet must be telling truth.

The article says that the developer behind the current application is different from the people behind the previous, refused application.
On the surface, that may be true.

However, of the 3 main people involved in the previous scheme of a year ago, one has since gone to jail, one has since died, whilst the third still has a financial stake in the current proposal.

The current proposal is very far from being "new". It is the same old hideous eyesore that was almost foisted upon Bournemouth last year, with only minor modifications.

All these "developers" want the same thing: to build a lump of flats, which Bournemouth does not need, and hotel rooms, which Bournemouth does not need. Do the developers want these things because their motivation is to make Bournemouth a better place? Hardly. The developers are not from Bournemouth, and there is no reason to believe that they will have the slightest ongoing interest in Bournemouth. Rather, they are a national plc, and they are in this to make the biggest profit for themselves.

Surely the best thing for the heart of Bournemouth - which is based on a lovely beach and coastline - is NOT to encircle a major junction with towering high-rises, casting shadows and blighting the skyline.

The Winter Gardens is in Council Leader John Beesley's ward. One wonders if his constituents whose lives would be degraded by this architectural nightmare will have to express at the May elections how they feel about it.

I lost faith when they got rid of the old arcade and put a top-shop, or whatever it is, there. There is a plaque on the wall commemorating the arcade on the outside of a glass fronted, faceless shop. It saddens me every time i see it.. Also some of the plans for the Imax site looked good but what we received was an empty, walled hole.
I lost faith when they got rid of the old arcade and put a top-shop, or whatever it is, there. There is a plaque on the wall commemorating the arcade on the outside of a glass fronted, faceless shop. It saddens me every time i see it.. Also some of the plans for the Imax site looked good but what we received was an empty, walled hole. wadjit
