Top pitches on future study subjects by Bournemouth students praised at Oxford University
SOME of Britain’s brightest students could one day be studying subjects devised by Bournemouth teenagers.
Avonbourne and Harewood students took part in a competition at Oxford University to present ideas on what new subjects the university could offer.
And their ideas put them in the top two places of the 13 schools invited to take part.
The Harewood boys pitched the idea of Comic Book Studies with the girls from Avonbourne presenting their plans for Science of Deduction.
Their arguments were presented in front of 150 people with the girls finally coming out on top.
The inspirational day was the culmination of a mentoring programme the students have received from Oxford which involved representatives visiting Bournemouth to teach Latin, maths and presentation skills to the bright set of Year 10 students.
Executive headteacher of Avonbourne and Harewood colleges, Debbie Godfrey-Phaure, said: “This has shown our students that their aspirations really are limitless.
“Presenting in front of that many distinguished people and coming first and second with their ideas has been a real boost to their confidence.
“We know they have the potential to go all the way and I’m sure that for many of them this will not be their last visit to the University of Oxford.”
The students’ visit to Oxford also included lunch and a tour of St John’s College and a question and answer session with students studying at Merton College.
