Drawing signed by Real Madrid players after historic Dean Court game to raise funds for Andy Culliford
A DRAWING signed by Real Madrid’s millionaire players after their historic match at Dean Court last summer will be sold to raise funds for “inspirational” non-league star Andy Culliford.
Former Poole Town player Andy, who is battling motor neurone disease, is desperate for money to finance his drug treatment.
The married dad-of-one, who was diagnosed in August 2011, needs hundreds of pounds of drugs every day in his fight against the debilitating disease.
“No-one will officially pay for my treatment because the drugs I need are unlicensed,” he told the Daily Echo.
“Until they’ve been proven, no-one will help me.
“It makes me feel really isolated in some ways, but the help I’m getting off other people is amazing.
“My wife and my sister have helped so much, they are like my guardian angels. And my four-year-old daughter, Isla, is amazing as well. If it wasn’t for all of them I may have given up.”
Former Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell – who has acquired a two-year majority share option in Poole Town and describes Andy as “inspirational” – donated the artwork after Real’s superstar players, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, signed it.
Artist Cameron Hope composed the digital drawing from photographs of the day Real Madrid came to AFC Bournemouth – it depicts crowds surrounding the Real Madrid coach as it arrived at the stadium.
Cameron said: “I wanted to do something that encapsulated the day, something other than just a picture of Ronaldo or another big Real Madrid star.”
Andy, who recently completed the London Marathon despite having hardly any use of his arms, said: “It would be amazing if some generous person came forward and paid for it. I’ve been on drug treatment for over a year, costing £200 a day, but I need more. I want to stay alive for as long as I can for my family.”
