SOME truly iconic racing cars have been confirmed for Bournemouth’s first-ever Wheels Festival in May.

The event, which takes place over the late May bank holiday weekend, will see wheel-based attractions across the town.

Now, details have been confirmed of cars that will be running along a specially-made circuit on the East Overcliff – and they are sure to get racing fans salivating.

One of the star attractions will be the 1992 Benetton Formula One car that was driven by Michael Schumacher as the future seven-time world champion, who is currently fighting for his life following a skiing accident in December, made his way in the sport.

In all, there will be six groups of six cars and motorbikes, each representing a different sector.

Also in the F1 group will be a 1989 Camel Lotus 101, which was driven by world champion Nelson Piquet and Satoru Nakajima and a 1984 Toleman once driven by Ayrton Senna. There will also be a selection of Le Mans legends, including a Ferrari Daytona raced in the 1970s and a Ford GT40 – so called because it was just 40 inches high – which was raced at the French circuit by future Formula 1 world champion Jochen Rindt and Lotus Formula 1 driver Innes Ireland.

Also featuring will be supercars and Moto GP bikes.

Jon Weaver, Wheels Festival director, said: “The fantastic demonstration straight will be a unique and unmissable sight as it will be the first time this has been done in any UK coastal destination.

“It is set to be an exciting crowd pleaser, drawing in people of all ages as they come to see and hear a great mix of cars – from the visceral roar of the historic F1 cars and nostalgic Le Mans to the beautiful high-powered supercars – tearing along the East Overcliff course.

“It will be a sight not to be missed and for those wanting an enhanced view there will be grandstand seating free with the souvenir programme available too.”
