GRAMMAR schools in Bournemouth and Poole have been named among the top 200 state schools for the number of students entered for the English Baccalaureate.

The qualification is highly regarded by top universities as they struggle to distinguish between the most able students.

Students have the EBacc if they gain at least a grade C GCSE in maths, English, science, a humanities subject and a foreign language. At Bournemouth School, 92 per cent were entered for the EBacc with a success rate of 82 per cent. At the neighbouring Bournemouth School for Girls 85 per cent were entered and 83 per cent achieved the qualification.

At Poole Grammar the figures were 83 and 74 respectively and at Parkstone Grammar they were 70 and 66.

Headteacher at Bournemouth School, Dr Dorian Lewis, is celebrating the success of GCSE and A level students with seven students offered places at Oxford or Cambridge Universities, subject to this summer’s results.

He said: “We were especially pleased with the very high proportion of students attaining the EBacc, reflecting the breadth and rigour of our Key Stage 4 curriculum. Students typically take 12 GCSEs. It is also pleasing to see that disadvantaged students are clearly thriving in this setting. I feel privileged to lead a school of such talented students and dedicated staff, and am delighted that the efforts of students.”

At Bournemouth School for Girls, results last year were up and headteacher Alistair Brien said: “We are delighted with the results achieved.”
