WILD seas and gale force winds couldn’t put a stop to the annual bath tub race at Poole Quay.

Dozens of hardy – some would say mad – participants risked life and limb and plunged into the water to the amazement of onlookers.

Despite torrential rain they entered into the spirit of things, pelting each other with eggs as they battled it out in the ever-competitive challenge.

Most ended up in the water and the start was delayed several times until all racers were back in their tubs.

When the race finally got going, it had to be cut short because those taking part were fighting a losing battle with the tide and fierce wind.

Last year’s winners, a team from Independent Safety Evaluation, relished the challenge of retaining their title but were scuppered by sabotage from another team.

ISE team members Chris Dello, Simon Ball, Mark Ball and Andy Keene were determined to take part, whatever the weather.

Chris’wife, Karen, said: “They have done this every year for the last 18 years so there was no way they were going to abandon it. We knew they would do it rain or shine because they’re all mad.”

Craft included the aptly-named Titanic, a pirate ship and a Baywatch boat, complete with a 6ft male Pamela Anderson.

Around 200 people watched from the rain-battered quay, including Paul and Julie Robertson, visiting from London with their children.

Julie said: “We were told about this event last night but we never believed it would actually happen in this weather. The children think it’s very funny and it looks good fun.”

The event was organised by bosses at the Blue Boar pub and most competitors retired to the hostelry for a welcome drink afterwards.

Adam Morris said: “Everyone enjoyed it despite the weather. There were a few less tubs than usual but it didn’t spoil it.”

The event was a far cry from last year’s race when glorious sunshine saw thousands of people line the quay for the race.
