A GARAGE in Bournemouth could be demolished to make way for a block of flats.

Dave Wells Properties is currently seeking permission to build a three-storey block of 18 flats on the site at Bridle Crescent, off the Iford roundabout in Christchurch Road, currently occupied by used-vehicle dealership Car-Link.

A similar, larger, scheme for two blocks of 20 flats was rejected by Bournemouth Borough Council and then the planning inspector in 2009 on the basis that the design would overwhelm the neighbouring houses.

But DWP says the revised scheme has taken these concerns into account. The application reads: "The entire development is smaller than the previous scheme with reductions being made to the width, depth and overall height.

"Given the above, it is considered that the revised scheme sits comfortable within the plot and respects the proportions of neighbouring houses and the prevailing pattern of development."

There would be 13 one-bedroom flats and 5 two-bedroom, with a glazed facade that will "create a landmark entrance to Bournemouth from Christchurch and will positively contribute to the street scene."

There will be 16 off-street parking spaces and cycle and bin storage, and a soakway under the parking area to minimise flood risk.
