STANDARDS of care have now improved at a Poole nursing home that was originally deemed to be failing in all areas, a new inspection has confirmed.

As reported in the Daily Echo, Avalon nursing home in Branksome Park failed every single part of a Care Quality Commission inspection carried out in June and was ordered to make immediate improvements.

Problems inspectors found included some patients not receiving medication for several days and others not being helped to eat and drink sufficient amounts. The home was also criticised for being dirty and understaffed.

But the results of a second inspection have now been published, which confirm Avalon now meets eight out of the 10 standards assessed.

The only areas where further improvements are still required are respecting and involving people who use services and assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision.

The owner of the home, former AFC Bournemouth chairman Abdul Jaffer, said they took immediate action to address the issues raised in the first inspection report.

He said there was a new manager in place and residents had recently been assessed and found to be happy with their care and wellbeing.

“Everything and more that the CQC picked up on has been actioned and we have since taken in more residents,” he said.

“This was a very unfortunate situation, it happened and it has been put right. I care about the welfare and wellbeing of the residents and of my staff, as I would my own family. The welfare of our residents is always our priority.

“I would also like to add that during the original inspection, a relative described the home as ‘a lovely family atmosphere’ and this shows there are many positives, which have not been reported publicly.”

The home’s current manager, who asked not to be named, added: “I can confirm that there were issues which had to be addressed back in June. However, from August all of the issues raised had been addressed and adhered to.

“We have happy residents and a hardworking team of staff, who care about the residents and their wellbeing. The improvements now in place will be adhered to.”
