BAGS of rubbish were left festering at Ashley Cross green for two days following Party in the Park – only to be cleaned up by the council.

Close to 10,000 people are thought to have attended the two day music festival over the August Bank Holiday Weekend. Though it finished on the Sunday, piles of bin bags, some torn by animals, blighted the green until the Tuesday night, when they were finally cleared by Borough of Poole.

One angry resident, who said she had endured a weekend of “house shaking music” and seen revellers urinating by her car, said it was the “final straw” to find she couldn’t enjoy the green days later.

Sarah Dominey, 45, whose house almost overlooks the park, told the Echo: “It was in a disgusting state. I saw flies swarming around some of the bags which had food in. Even if it was Bank Holiday surely the event organisers should have had some sort of contingency in place to get it cleaned up. To walk in the park two days later and still see festering rubbish on the ground attracting vermin was the final straw.”

Jane Jones, pictured, organiser of Party in the Park, admitted there had been “far more rubbish than normal” – more than the dozen 11,000 litre bins on site could cope with. She said they had cleared up “every last plastic cup”, but the waste contractors had mistakenly failed to pick up the additional bin bags on Tuesday when they collected the bins. She said she later instructed her team to clear them – but the council got there first. She told the Echo: “In 14 years this had never happened before. I hold my hands up and apologise. It was a very unfortunate situation, and a pity after the event went so well.”

Anthony Rogers, the council’s recreation manager, added: “Any costs incurred for collecting and disposing of this litter will be discussed with the event organiser."
