Thousands flock to Party in the Park

First published in News

THOUSANDS of people flocked to the carnival-themed Party in the Park over this weekend.

The popular Daily Echo-backed event at Ashley Cross Park saw crowds enjoy a stellar line-up of music over the Bank Holiday, with international DJs Norman Jay MBE and Jazzie B and Rowetta from Happy Mondays performing today.

The area was transformed with an outdoor open air stage for the two-day event.

Taking place on the same weekend as the famous Notting Hill carnival, there was plenty to keep youngsters entertained with activities, stalls, games and refreshments.

Local bands also performed on the stage, including the winners of Europe's best reggae band.

The event is raising money for Lewis Manning Hospice with local businesses helping to support the event as well.

Organiser Jane Jones said the event had been a brilliant success.

“Saturday was just fantastic; the atmosphere was so lovely. It was wonderful to see young and old having such a good time.

“It just went to show what a great event this really is.

“The atmosphere was electric.

“I think Sunday will be the busier day as Jazzie B has so many followers who travel around following them.

“I think there will have been nearly 10,000 people here by the time the weekend is over."

It is the 14th year of the festival, which started out as 'Brunch in the Park'.

Jane added: “Obviously over the years, it has just got bigger and better and evolved tremendously.”
