FIREFIGHTERS were called to a grass fire next to a road this morning.

More than 30 people called the emergency services to report that 10 metres of grass were alight along the roadside of the A350 on the outskirts of Blandford.

Two fire engines from Blandford attended the scene and used hose reel jets to put out the blaze.

Could also have been caused by a traction engine on its way to the steam fair. Might also have a catalytic converter - they get hot enough to ignite dry grass. My money would be on a discarded fag end though.

I was one of the 30+ who called it in. It didn't look anything like 10m when we went past. OH refused to stop (she's always a bit wussy about stopping on busy roads). A couple of passing motorists could probably have stamped it out without even bothering fire and rescue, or at least kept it down to just a few m until fire and rescue arrived.
