Court hearings postponed across the county as barristers strike in legal aid protest

Bournemouth Echo: Barrister Nick Robinson, centre, with colleagues Barrister Nick Robinson, centre, with colleagues

COURT hearings across Dorset have been postponed today as barristers take part in a full-day strike.

It is the second this year as lawyers protest cuts to legal aid.

Hearings were postponed at Bournemouth’s Crown and Magistrates’ Courts as every defence lawyer – and many Crown Prosecution Service barristers – participated in the action.

January's half-day strike marked a historic first as British trial lawyers across the country objected to government cuts of up to 30 per cent to legal fees.

Self-employed barrister Nick Robinson said the strike has taken place as lawyers feel their concerns have been ignored by the Ministry of Justice.

The proposed reforms, which are due to come into force for trials starting from April onwards, would reduce the legal aid budget to an annual £1.5 billion.

The cuts are just one element of a broad government cost-cutting programmed aimed at reducing Britain’s budget deficit.

Me Robinson said people are often shocked at how much barristers earn – an average wage of £22,400.

Google barristers average wage - •Qualified barristers can be paid anything from £25,000 to £300,000. Why complain about the wage anyway, before starting your job you knew what the potential wage would be. If you want to earn more then you should have become an MP!!!

Defence solicitors and barristers have been screwing the nations finances via the legal aid system for decades. The current expenditure of over £2 billion a year in fee's to defend criminals can no longer be justified. Cuts are long overdue.

The best way to ensure that we all get state funded legal protection whilst also keeping the total bill down is to limit the amount of times that a person can call on the taxpayer to fund their criminal defence. E.g. you can get 3 legal aid paid defences over a rolling 10 year period. That would be plenty for the 99% of us law abiding people. Only the prolific offenders would soon run out of chances, and so perhaps become a little bit more responsible for their actions. The legal aid bill would naturally start to fall as a result.

"If you want to earn more then you should have become an MP!!!" is exactly what a lot of practising and would be lawyers have done - including Blair, so that probably explains a few things!

I really cannot see these lawyers gaining much public sympathy - especially from people who for whatever reason have ever engaged one. And why is it UK legal-aid so often seems to go to the most undeserving of folk, including those who have never paid anything worthwhile into our tax system.

'New Fathers 4 Justice' have no sympathy for the lawyers legal aid protests. Did they strike when legal aid for divorce cases was withdrawn with the exception of those involving accusations of violence and abuse.

No they only strike when it affects their own pocket

Several times a week we hear from fathers about lawyers that have encouraged mothers to make false allegations of abuse because the only way that she's going to get legal aid is if she says that she's been knocked about or that there is a problem with the children.

Those that ride on the family law gravy train have only themselves to blame.
