BLIND people in Dorset now have access to specially-adapted computers after a Bournemouth charity invested in a new assistive technology suite.

The Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Eddie Coope, officially opened the new suite at Bournemouth Blind Society, as well as an upgraded resource centre.

Following the two-month project, over 70 members of the charity, staff, volunteers and supporters were excited to use the new rooms, with guided tours provided, followed by celebrations with Christmas tunes, tea and cake.

The Bournemouth Blind Society says users need to be taught how to use the available software to allow them to communicate in the modern world. Prior to the Assistive Technology Suite being opened in Bournemouth, the nearest facilities were in Bristol and Brighton.

The charity’s chief executive Philip Tarrant said: “We are very grateful for the foresight of our trustees who recognised the need for these facilities. With the financial support of the Talbot Village Trust and a number of private donations, we have been able to provide a modern space for tuition in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.”

All tuition is provided free of charge to any visually impaired person, under the guidance of Action for Blind People in Salisbury. Many of the tutors are volunteers with computer-based backgrounds. Classes are tailored to the student’s individual needs and can be booked by calling 01202 546644.

Geraldine Bradley, community services manager, added: “Whilst the AT Suite was being developed, the opportunity was taken to upgrade our Resource Centre where we demonstrate equipment designed to help both sight and hearing impaired people to lead independent lives.

“The new rooms are lighter and brighter, offering more space for clients to try out equipment including talking clocks and watches, electronic magnifiers, telephone and television amplifiers. All equipment can then be ordered and purchased. The Resource Centre is open Monday to Friday from 10am–1pm and no appointments are necessary.”

Bournemouth Blind Society was founded in 1911 and continues to provide centre-based social activities and community support to blind and partially sighted people in the Bournemouth area. Anyone interested in finding out more about the charity or volunteering can visit bournemouthblindsociety.uk.
