MORE than 70 young rugby players were treated to an expert training session from one of the country’s premiership clubs.

Children from East Dorset RFC were joined by junior players from neighbouring clubs, including Oakmedians RFC, for the coaching day with Exeter Chiefs’ community developing coach, Andrew Dudley.

It was the first time the session took place at East Dorset RFC’s home at Iford Lane Playing Grounds.

Exeter Chiefs, who are currently fifth in the Aviva Premiership, run rugby camps at various venues throughout the course of the season.

East Dorset rugby coach Darren Close trains players aged six to nine on Sunday mornings.

He called the coaching session with Exeter Chiefs a “great success”.

He said: “The whole day was based on the core skills and values of rugby. The first part of the day involved non-contact skills, such as handling, and improving the kids’ abilities within rugby.

“The afternoon session was more physical and taught the players safe tackling and how to eliminate head injuries.

“The children were very enthusiastic and excited about the day. They all got stuck in. We’re hoping to make it an annual thing.”

He added: “The representatives from Exeter Chief were very impressed with the turnout. I was a bit concerned as the organiser how many would turn up, but the rain didn’t stop them coming. We even had two children as far afield as Southampton come along.”

Andrew said the main aim of the coaching camp was to inspire the young players to reach their full potential.

“The session at East Dorset went absolutely perfectly,” he said.

“Despite the rain, the kids worked hard. They learned different aspects of rugby, including contact and non-contact skills.

“Our club runs camps across the South West every half term, and it’s brilliant to see loads of people interested in Exeter Chiefs.

“This was the first one at East Dorset, and it was really well turned out.

“We’re definitely hoping to return to the club soon.”
