BOURNEMOUTH has been recognised across Europe as a world-class resort after taking the gold at this year's prestigious European competition, Entente Florale.

Judges from 11 European countries toured the borough in August this year and on the day scored the town on its floral displays, environment, development and regeneration, tourism and businesses.

Bournemouth was one of only two UK locations to be judged in this year's competition, the other being Edinburgh, and the judges were impressed by what they saw.

Councillor John Beesley, leader of Bournemouth Council, said: “This is a tremendous achievement and recognition that Bournemouth has so much to offer as both a place to live and as a world-class resort.

“I am very proud of Bournemouth. Not only are we spoilt for choice with award winning beaches, parks and gardens, we are also leading the way with our green initiatives, regeneration and investment in building a better Bournemouth.”

Rob Allardyce, business support manager for the town's parks, said: “The result is fantastic and really showcases Bournemouth across the whole of Europe.

“The judges were impressed from both environment and tourism perspectives but also how we are developing Bournemouth for the future.”

Judges visited a number of locations across the borough including the seafront, town centre and Lower Gardens, Littledown Centre, J.P. Morgan Chaseside, Charminster, Hengistbury Head and Boscombe.

The result comes just days after Bournemouth's success in this year's South and South East in Bloom Awards.

Other Gold award winners were Tralee in Ireland, Kitzingen in Germany and Gyula in Hungary.
