Community order for teacher caught downloading child abuse images on school grounds

A FORMER teacher at a Fordingbridge prep school has admitted downloading almost 200 indecent images of children.

“Dedicated and competent” John Paul Clarke, now of Banks Road, Poole, searched on Russian websites for photographs of young boys while living in a flat in the grounds of Forres Sandle Manor.

Police discovered he had used terms including ‘teen boy’ and ‘boy punishment’ as search terms, even accessing images on his laptop just hours before he was arrested.

Clarke was yesterday spared jail at Bournemouth Crown Court after a judge said it was in the public interest to rehabilitate the 35-year-old instead.

He had admitted 17 counts of making indecent images before magistrates.

Anita Gibson-Lee, prosecuting, said police had first started to investigate Clarke after he ordered a DVD involving footage of young children online using his personal email address.

She said: “He gave consent for his Toshiba laptop to be examined.

“He stated at that time that no indecent images of children would be found.”

However, officers discovered he had been accessing indecent images of children.

Mitigating, Richard Martin said parents at the school had taken the unusual step of writing letters to the judge in support of the defendant.

“He made a very full and frank admission to the offences. This is a defendant of previous good character and I am able to put before the court a bundle of references,” he said.

He added that Clarke was a “vulnerable” man who would “struggle in custody”.

“He has clearly suffered something as a child that may well be coming back to haunt him,” Mr Martin said.

Sentencing Clarke to a three-year supervised community order with a requirement to attend a treatment programme, as well as an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order, Judge Samuel Wiggs explained that he would otherwise be limited to a six-month sentence of imprisonment.

“I have to consider what is the right sentence in the interests of the public, in the interests of the law and indeed in your own interests,” he said.

Perverts must be creaming their pants when they realise he is doing their sentencing.
Personally I think he should be locked up as well.

Yet again Judge Wiggs makes the repeated statement "in the interests of the public" How can it be in anyone's interests apart from other perverts to continually allow this type of person to walk freely amongst us or indeed our children and grandchildren.

What exactly do these perverts have to do before they get removed from society to protect potential victims? OK, he wasn't caught actually abusing anyone but for his viewing pleasure, a number of young boys were abused. And Judge Wiggs considers the perv 'vulnerable'? FFS when are we going to get a justice system that protects the victims & punishes the criminals? And gets rid of all the 'do-gooder' judges whose main interests seems to be the welfare of criminals.

But that's the way it all starts, viewing pleasure to start with which then leads to participating for even more so called pleasure, Its about time Judge Wiggs was removed to a retirement home and someone put in his place who perhaps lives in the real world to produce real sentences to something that has become a real problem.
Richard Martin said, “He made a very full and frank admission to the offences. This is a defendant of previous good character and I am able to put before the court a bundle of references,”.
Oh well that's ok then, I wonder if Richard Martin would be of the same opinion if his kids were the ones being looked at by this filth mongering peasant.
Good character or not he should pay the price for his actions.
I also wonder what sort of parents there are that would write letter of support for this scumbag, perhaps their sanity should be questioned by social services.

Perhaps Wiggs thinks this is a victimless crime, it's not. These immoral and conscienceless people are sexual predators, and will ruin the lives of those children.

The vast majority of the parent body are disgusted by his behaviour and whilst I have to admit that yes, he was a good teacher, if I had been given the chance to write in, I would have explained to the judge just how it has made me feel knowing that my children have been taught by this man. I am sorry to hear that 'he is a vulnerable man who would struggle in custody' but it seems that the judge has completely ignored the vulnerability of the children he is looking at on the internet, or the children he is supposed to be caring for at boarding school. The law has gone mad... We are protecting the wrong people!

Sir, you are quite correct, all criminals no matter the gravity of their misdemeanour should have their crime tattooed on their forehead. I, myself can only use this forum to praise and thank the good readers of the Echo for their insightful and well considered comments, as my own Public School education, of course, has rendered me extremely to susceptible to the temptations of Paedophilia, and therefore I am hardly in a position to defend the preference.

Madam, you are indefatigably astute! All members of staff at Public Schools decide at the age of 18, upon entering University, that the sole purpose of their chosen path is the unfettered ability to view adolescent genitalia.

Degenerate filth such as this should be incarcerated for life.
There would be little point in rehabilitating and re-educating these 'sickos' as they clearly 'offer nothing' to society.
It is my belief that if the generous and brilliant readers of the Echo were to comment hard enough I believe the Death Sentence could be reinstated and offer a much more satisfactory solution!

Please keep commenting dear, clever readers! It is you, not the moronic and clearly perverted Public School, Paedophile infested Judicial system that possesses the wherewithal to condemn yourselves.

Ummm...excuse me? I went through loads of issues as a child and was constantly bullied until the age of 16....yet I'm not out there viewing disgusting vile pictures of children and neither am I committing crimes!

"Mitigating, Richard Martin said parents at the school had taken the unusual step of writing letters to the judge in support of the defendant."

This I find rather strange.....how one earth could parents at the school support this sicko!? Surely they must realise that if this guy hadn't been caught he may have gone on to actual abuse?

Judge Wiggs doesn't live in the real word in my opinion and seems to side on the rights of the criminal!
I don't think the judge means a bit bullying, a think he means the defendant was sexually abused as a child which makes you statistically more likely to abuse children and look at images of child abuse as an adult. I was bullied and had a tough childhood with physical abuse and losing a parent but I can't even imagine how messed up you'd be if you were sexually abused as a kid.

Sir, you are quite correct, all criminals no matter the gravity of their misdemeanour should have their crime tattooed on their forehead. I shall draft a letter to the Prime Minister immediately after I have completed this comment, suggesting your brilliant idea. I will of course allow you full credit.

Well, it appears that any-one who feels angry enough to want to rid the world of the filth that pervades our society and threatens our children are made a sneering joke out of.
It did not take you long to crawl out of the woodwork and go into bat for your fellow man did it?

Nowhere near as distressing as it was for the young children in the images he was viewing. Sadly I doubt they are fortunate to be from a fee paying education.
Alicealice get with the real world and think about the children involved not just the establishment thats name is now tarnished which is more likely the reason for your upset. I think though its more likely embarrassment amongst your social circle.

Lord Parkstone - my reason for being upset has nothing to do with the schools reputation or embarrassment within my social circle... My son has been In Daily contact with this man for years- the reason I am upset is because it makes my skin crawl to think that when he looked at my son in a lesson, he might have been seeing him as a sexual object. The fact that it is a private school is irrelevant! Surely I am entitled to feel upset?

Many commentators who don't know Mr Clarke seem to have been quick to judge him.

Many parents, pupils and ex pupils thought that he was a great teacher who worked very hard and who had a very positive impact on those he taught.

I don't in any way condone what he did, but would point out that there is no evidence at all that this was any more than looking at web-sites, and would suggest that many of the comments are disproportionate.

It is a great shame that the school has had to lose a great teacher
