Coastguard officers and police deal with 'flashing' incident on Knoll Beach, Studland

Bournemouth Echo: Police detain 'naked man flashing children' on beach Police detain 'naked man flashing children' on beach

A NAKED man was detained by police yesterday after apparently ‘flashing’ a group of children on a Dorset beach.

Swanage Coastguard Rescue Officers, while responding to another job shortly before 4pm on Saturday, “observed a naked male exposing himself to a group of children on Knoll Beach, Studland,” a spokesman for Portland Coastguard said.

The team stayed with the children and kept the man under observation until police arrived and detained him.

Dorset Police has now confirmed that a man was arrested and relased on bail pending further enquiries.

"..There is a designated naturist area between Shell Bay and Knoll Beach.."

I suspect in this case the man was not on the nudist beach (or maybe close to the edge) and was perhaps deliberately going out of his way to expose himself to children, given the proximity of the nudist beach I doubt the police would arrest a man for simply 'being nude' more likely it was his actions that caused distress, perhaps he was even aroused?

Echo, more detail please. (on the arrest not on the arousal)

Not sure what is going on here, but that is the nudist beach so hard to flash; and even if he was out of the nudist area why be so intolerant? i suspect it's the usual conservative over reaction of the public and those who police this beach. Meanwhile in France or Spain they aren't so neurotic over nudity. As for causing distress, the law is plainly on the side of the public even if they have super conservative intolerant morals and find any nudity "distressing" whatever that means. I mean, really, has anyone ever died when faced with a nude person?

Yes this is what i meant really.
Very easy for some pervert to bend the rules of some nudest area, but also very easy to create hysteria over a non hysterical situation. Even in a designated area someone can call the police and say "please think of the children and this man is distressing me" and they have to attend. Im just saying that a situation becomes news depending on the way its reported.
Oh dear. The Echo has made me so cynical.

'Flashing' as it is colloquially termed is dealt with by Section 66 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003:

A person commits an offence if—
(a)he intentionally exposes his genitals, and
(b)he intends that someone will see them and be caused alarm or distress.

(The use of 'he' is not gender specific)

**There must be an 'intent' to cause alarm or distress.

Simple nudity is not against the Law in England and Wales, it is only the circumstances which enables or provokes Police action.
There is no such thing as an official public nudist or naturist beach in the UK - only places accepted by common usage.

we actually saw this man. I was with a group of friends with children and he came from the dunes totally starkers and muttering. Probably in his early twenties, totally off his tiny mind. i don't think he was actually flashing at our children on purpose. He just happened to be naked and totally out of it. It was a bit odd to see a fully grown man dragging himself through the sand on his belly and then splash about in the water with gay abandon. i don't think he was in his right mind so we thought best to keep well away.

If he wasnt suggestively sexual or aroused then what exactly has he done to offend you ?

7 miles of golden sands to choose from and you end up pn the 300 yard wide nudist section, how very clever.

we were not anywhere near the nudist beach and the term gay abandon does not refer to the sexual orientation of a person, merely a rather old fashioned term denoting a rather carefree attitude. And that he most definitely was. If you saw him, you could say that he was totally unaware of anyone else and he certainly wasn't flashing at small children on purpose...but it wasn't the prettiest sight i can assure you!

It's adjacent to a beach used by all walk of life, that stretch of beach should not be for the sole use of nudists, freaks, paedos and so on.. it's just that the deviants think they are so funny doing shuttle runs up and down the beach to the signs saying no nudists beyond this points etc.. but then you would know that wouldn't you weirdo.
