TODAY could be the hottest day of the year so far with the mercury set to reach 24C.

Some parts of Britain are set to sizzle in temperatures of 27C, making it hotter than the likes of Berlin, Paris and Rio.

According to the Met Office forecast there will be long periods of sunshine until 12noon before things take a cloudier turn this afternoon.

But if you were planning on a trip to the beach tomorrow you’ll need to take a brolly as the rain is set to return with light showers forecast.

The Met Office outlook for tomorrow says: “Generally dry and bright with the best of the sunny spells in the west. There will be more cloud in eastern areas with some isolated showers possible at times. Maximum Temperature 22C.

While Sunday is expected to be dry with long periods of sunshine and highs of 21C.

The outlook for Sunday to Tuesday says: “Mainly dry throughout with variable amounts of cloud and some good sunny spells. Winds will remain light and it will feel warm in the sunny spells.”

Earlier this week the Met Office’s long-range forecast suggested that this summer could be the hottest ever recorded.
