A LARGE-scale manhunt was launched last night after an armed robbery at a betting shop in Bournemouth.

Detectives were called to Ladbrokes at Christchurch Road, between Pokesdown station and Iford Roundabout, after a man wielding a hammer entered the shop at 6.24pm and demanded cash.

They have released two CCTV images of the suspect and are asking any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Following the raid, the police helicopter was scrambled to the area to help multiple police units on the ground in the search.

A spokesman said the robber threatened a male member of staff, who handed over money – the amount of which has not been revealed – before the offender fled the scene.

Detective Inspector Mark Samuel, of Bournemouth CID, said: “We were able to obtain very high quality CCTV images very quickly in relation to this incident.

“I am hoping that somebody will be able to recognise the suspect from these photographs. I would ask anyone who recognises him to contact Dorset Police urgently.

“I am keen to speak with anyone who has any information about the incident or may have seen the man in the area of Christchurch Road this evening.”

The robber is described as white, aged in his mid-30s, about 5ft 9in tall with short black hair.

He was wearing a white shirt with a black pin-striped suit jacket and jeans. He was also carrying a computer style bag.

Nobody was injured during the incident and no arrests have yet been made.

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101, quoting incident number 7:377.

Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.

The robbery is one of six to have taken place in the area over the past few weeks.

An armed raider entered Central store at Cunningham Crescent, West Howe, on April 28, an attempted armed robbery occured at the Co-op in Bearwood on Saturday, April 19, as well as an incident in April at the Coral bookmakers in Winton.

Other incidents include a raid at a flat on the Quay, Poole, on April 25 and a 33-year-old woman was robbed at knifepoint in Lowther Gardens, Bournemouth, on April 23.

So the if they catch the toe rag ,and he is prosecuted ( highly unlikely ) he might get a £80 fine for the 'incident' or a suspended sentence and leave the bill to the tax payer as normal.

Lets face it, this robber is either very stupid, very drunk, very desperate or a combination of all three with such a clear CCTV and stiff jail term for armed robbery.

Only idiots do this kind of "old school" crime these days - I work in finance and I can tell you that electronic fraud is where sensible criminals go - firstly there is a very small chance of being caught, secondly there is and even smaller chance of being prosecuted as firms are loathe to report it and finally if you are unlucky enough to get convicted the sentences are relative light as "no one got hurt".

FUN FACT: The police own the chopper outright, the 2-3 crew are regular salaried police officers and the pilot is a salaried civilian. It's just the cost of maintenance and fuel. Everything else is covered! About 10 years ago, the cost of keeping the helicopter us was about £40 per hour. Probably double that now with modern fuel costs!

How much does it cost to fly a helicopter against a few dog units and some drones?
You are an idiot of the highest order.
I thought it was about £2000 an hour,
So the if they catch the toe rag ,and he is prosecuted ( highly unlikely ) he might get a £80 fine for the 'incident' or a suspended sentence and leave the bill to the tax payer as normal.
So you'd rather armed robbery was allowed to happen because the tax payer ends up net short to catch them? Head up.

I think security needs to be stepped up re; open plan pay desks in all bookies. It was done in an attempt to bring in new punters as a welcoming touch and change the way people perceive the old fashioned places to look, but obviously leads to easier attempts at robbery.

Take the ruddy hammer off him. Easy to say I know but by the time he'd taken to raise his arm the staff member could have whipped the money tray away and doinked him with it.
Saying that, the close up still of him is quite scary.
Shame for the people working in there who are just doing their job.
You've been watching far too much Columbo again, go back to sleep or open that bag of Wurthers Originals you've been saving
Uh...what? Does that comment actually make any sense? Relevant or sympathetic to the story? No.
Don't choke on that bile you're sending out to people.

I for one would be every nervous of working in any bookies with open counters like that.

I think the guys online account had the usual glitches that Ladbrokes have.
And with the bad customer service they have, he just wanted his winnings ,so went to the local shop to get it .
May have been doing some DIY at home and forgot he still had his little hammer in his hand.
