HUNDREDS of people made a splash this weekend in Poole’s 36th annual swimarathon at Dolphin swimming pool.

Organisers hope the two-day event, which featured 75 teams of six and 450 swimmers in total, will raise £12,000 for charities in the area.

Teams from schools and businesses had 55 minutes to complete as many lengths as they could in aid of Julia’s House, Forest Holme, Poole Christmas Parcels Fund, The Purple Teardrop, Home Start and Poole Young Carers.

Organiser Ray Kressinger, of Poole Lions, said it was a great annual event and he was grateful for the help of the Rotary Club and Poole Soroptimists for putting the weekend’s activities together.

“We get people and families who come back to support us year after year,” he added.

“There is a great atmosphere, especially when the children get in the pool and their parents start yelling from the stands.

“It would be wonderful if we could find a corporate partner to sponsor the event next year and raise even more money.”

Master of ceremonies Keith Baker, of Broadstone, was back for his sixth year to commentate on the proceedings and keep the crowd entertained.

Keith said: “It’s a fun atmosphere with a mix of kids and older people.”

Jo Mansbridge, who was poolside to cheer on her 10-year-old granddaughter Lily Akin, said last year three generations of her family had been in the pool for the event, and was pleased Lily was so enthusiastic to be involved.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to give to others.”

Lily, who attends Talbot Heath, said she was proud that her team had managed to raise £150 for charity.
