CLEAN-UP: Bournemouth Student Union volunteers pick litter with Winton councillor Pat Oakley

First published in News by

A CRACK team of students joined a councillor to clear up the litter from the streets of Winton.

Cllr Pat Oakley, donning a green ‘big tidy up’ top, led the all-female contingent down Cardigan Road armed with trigger-style picking devices and rubbish bags.

The clear-up effort came after the Winton East councillor called for increased funding to tackle the litter problem in the area, which has a high student population.

Chloe Schendel-Wilson, student volunteering president at Bournemouth University, said: “Students sometimes forget in the excitement of being at university that we are living among families and an established community. It is important to show the local people that we care and are helping.”

Cllr Oakley said: “The student volunteers have a done a lot of good work in this area.

“The litter does not exclusively belong to the students.”

fair play to them. I would have been all over that in my uni days and not only because its an "all-female contingent" ;)

Well done to Pat Oakley. He has built up excellent relationships with the uni students. Whilst I belive Cardigan to be the worst road in Winton for students, in my eyes nothing could be done to fix that, however Pat does not give up. I will continue to vote for Pat at each election he stands as I truly believe he has made a difference.

I think you're going around with your eyes closed, every single road in winton is a problem road that's got students living in it, maybe Pat should walk around in the evenings to take a look at reality , what its really like to be a home owner in the student areas.

I think you will find Pat walking around in the evenings. Knocking on residents doors and listtening to the loacls. I live in winton myself and the roads around us have students that live in them, maybe we are lucky as if they do party it is on weekends and they letr us know before. This is due to Pat speaking with the students. Your problem is you are clearly just a whinger and if I was a student I would ensure if I lived next door to you I had my music on all night. You have to give respect to get repect and being the elder lead the way. Has worked for us so try it :)

Introduce the Community Charge. Those that drop litter will be contributing to the clean up instead of not having any financial responsibility for paying towards the services they use..
