THE Sea Cadets are looking for new members to sign up and enjoy the facilities at their new building in Boscombe.

Bournemouth Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets lost their ageing former home in Southbourne after it was demolished to make way for housing some two years ago.

However the unit’s volunteers refused to let the group disappear from the area and began a fundraising campaign, collecting £370,500 for a replacement.

Training Ship Phoebe, as it is known to the cadets, doubles as a community centre and will provide a constant source of much-needed funds for the unit.

Unit chairman Gary Stillman said: “The new building is in a prime location easily accessible by the local population, offering many activities for the young of all backgrounds.

“We are hoping word will get out to more young people encouraging them to come along and see the many opportunities on offer.

“The aim of the Sea Cadet Corps is to help young people towards responsible adulthood and to encourage them to reach their potential by developing valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct, using a nautical theme based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy.”

Cadets learn sailing, rowing and power boating, field crafts including knot tying and map reading, and take part in sports from football and swimming to mountain biking and rock climbing.

The corps is also seeking volunteers to train and join up as civilian instructors or officers.
