BOMB disposal experts were called to a Scout campsite near Wareham on Saturday after an unexploded artillery shell was found.

The device was uncovered at Buddens Farm - where Dorset County Scout camp is sited - near Hyde, Wareham.

The shell was reported to measure around a foot long.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said they were called at 4.24pm to reports of an unexploded artillery shell.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) took the shell away on Sunday morning.

Staff locked down the site and secured it throughout the incident, the police spokesperson added.

A message on Purbeck Police's Facebook page said: “These items are very unpredictable. If you see one do not be tempted to move it, alert others of the pending danger and move to a safe distance - at least 100 metres.

“Call the police immediately on 999, we will advise you of what to do. As a result of the bad weather it is possible more of these items may come to notice.”
