THE £150,000 renovation of Purbeck’s historic Priest’s Way Path has finished – with the pathway set to be officially opened at the end of next month.

Dignitaries and guests will assemble at Spyway Barn, Langton Matravers, before a procession and official unveiling of a commemorative stone.

The three-mile track, linking Langton Matravers to Swanage, will then be reopened.

Work on the pathway started in September, last year, after parish leaders lodged a grant application to bankroll repairs.

Prior to the repairs, some walkers said the pathway had deteriorated so much that it was becoming almost impossible to get along it, particularly during winter.

On the improvements, project spokesman Ian Vaughan Arbuckle said: “This is a major achievement which will undoubtedly enhance this important local facility while improving access for all.”

The work, carried out by Dorset County Council’s highways department, has included improving drainage, resurfacing and the creation of a new stretch of bridleway. Engineers have also ungraded several of the Priest Way’s adjoining paths.

The official reopening of the pathway is set for the morning of January 29.
