AN elderly woman was left trapped in her home after a “despicable” attack by a burglar.

Detectives in Ferndown are appealing for witnesses following the aggravated burglary in West Moors. Police said today that the incident happened between 6pm and 9.40pm on Friday at a home in Heathfield Way.

An unknown man gained entry and attacked the occupier, a woman in her seventies.

When she confronted him he pushed her wheelchair over, while she was seated in it, causing her to fall out and be trapped.

The offender carried out a search of the property and stole a large quantity of cash.

He left the victim incapacitated on the floor to be discovered later by a member of her family. She sustained a head injury, which required hospital treatment.

Detective Constable Andrew Burley, of Bournemouth CID, said: “This is a despicable crime on a vulnerable elderly woman.

“The offender is described as dressed in dark clothing and is believed to have been wearing a balaclava with a white scarf or T-shirt covering his lower face.

“I urgently appeal for anyone who saw this man or recalls any suspicious activity in the area at the time to come forward as soon as possible.

“Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101 in the strictest confidence.”

David Leighton, chief officer of Age UK Bournemouth, called the attack “shocking”.

He said: “The effects of crimes such as this can last far longer than the physical injuries. Many older people feel very insecure in their home and it is difficult for a victim of an assault to recover their confidence and so quality of life.

“This was a shocking attack on a vulnerable older person and I would appeal to anyone with information to come forward and speak to the police.”

No arrests have been made.

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 20:484. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.
