DOMESTIC abuse victims are being encouraged to speak out and call for help as part of a Christmas campaign.

Police and the Safer New Forest Partnership are working together to support those suffering in silence as reported incidents of domestic abuse often peak at Christmas. Hampshire Police has just launched its Speak Out Today campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse and to encourage any victims, abusers, friends and family to report it.

The campaign asks victims how much more they can take, as on average a woman can suffer 35 assaults before police are called.

New Forest chief inspector Tony Rowlinson said: “Any type of abuse against another person will not be tolerated.

“Domestic abuse, in particular, often goes on behind closed doors in the home and the victim is often too scared to report it.

“There are a number of professional agencies ready and willing to give victims the support they need to break the cycle of abuse – victims just need to pick up the phone and call.”

The Safer New Forest’s Don’t Suffer in Silence campaign features eye-catching posters giving vital phone numbers, such as the National Domestic Violence helpline, across the New Forest.

Cllr Jill Cleary, New Forest District Council portfolio holder for housing and communities, said: “Whether the abuse is physical or emotional, there are organisations, including the police and Women’s Aid workers, who are just a phone call away and ready to help victims.

“We give our full support to the Hampshire Police campaign and urge anybody who is suffering abuse or worried about a family member or friend, to speak out today.

“Take action to end the abuse.”
