A CONCERNED Bournemouth MP plans to spend a day on two hospital wards where the standard of care was heavily criticised.

Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood will spend a day observing doctors, nurses and healthcare staff on wards 3 and 26 – where some aspects of care were described as “inadequate”.

The Care Quality Commission’s report said: “Patients, their relatives and staff told us about incidents where patients had not been treated with dignity and respect. Some aspects of care were not met in a timely manner.

“This was found to be inadequate on medical care wards 3 and 26 in particular and, although to a lesser extent, across medical services as a whole. Some people in the medical care wards, including older frail people, were left in soiled beds.”

Mr Ellwood, who represents Bournemouth East, said: “I’ve requested to spend a full day observing both these wards and I’m going to do that in January.

“I want to see first-hand what’s going on and speak to people at every level so I can see for myself what is actually happening and what changes are being introduced. Bournemouth Hospital has been one of the best in the country – that’s why local residents have been very dismayed to see that the standards have dropped and the duty of care has failed in this way.”

He said he would also be meeting with the chief inspector to have a more detailed briefing on the problems at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
