Agreement introduced on harbour safety protocol

IN A bid to improve safety among small craft in Poole Harbour, a new agreement has been introduced following months of consultation.
Poole Harbour Commissioners has been speaking to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, RNLI, The Royal Yachting Association and local yacht clubs to seek agreement on new procedures.
Although voluntary, it is hoped it will improve the initial response to recreational emer-gencies within the harbour, in particular organised events where safety boats are being used.
“In recent years there have been a small number of incidents involving small craft, where the collective communication during the incident could have been improved,” said harbour master Brian Murphy.
“As a consequence, parties involved have had to work harder to bring the incident to a successful conclusion.”
Although the Coastguard has priority in co-ordinating the response to such incidents, PHC works closely with them. The new protocol aims to ensure all parties involved monitor the same communication channel.
