VIDEO: Bournemouth’s stand-up paddleboarding club named best in the country
BOURNEMOUTH’S biggest stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) club has been named the best in the country following the national championships.
Bournemouth BaySUP faced off against more than 130 others to be crowned the winner at Olympic rowing venue Dorney Lake in August. And to celebrate, the club held a tough challenge of its own at the weekend.
The ‘survivor series’, a gruelling sprint around a series of testing obstacles, is known to paddleboarders worldwide.
However, the weekend’s event is believed to be the first time it has ever taken place in the UK.
Treasurer and secretary Pete Holliday said: “BaySUP won the national championship, which was absolutely fantastic.
“But we wanted to hold our own event too, so we decided to bring the survivor series race to the country. The aim is basically to keep surviving, and the last person standing wins. We had multiple heats and sprints, and the course was very technical – it featured lots of twists and turns for racers to navigate. At the end of every round, someone is knocked out, and you keep paddling until you’re the last one left.”
With fewer numbers of female competitors, it was the men who faced the most exhausting final.
“We had three heats for women and five for men,” said Pete.
“It’s a full-on sprint covering 800 metres and five turns, so it’s really tiring, particularly for those who are in it for the longest amount of time. But we’ve had some great feedback from those who took part.”
Pete said BaySUP was one of the first paddleboarding clubs to launch in the UK.
And unlike many SUP groups, it doesn’t close its doors when the nights draw in.
“We have a winter series of events,” said Pete.
“In the colder months, there are five races around the county, and they’re a little bit more accessible.
“Paddleboarders of all levels can come along and take part, and we really welcome new members.
“The aim is really just to have fun with good people.”
