NEW speed cameras have been installed in Sandbanks – but they won’t be catching anybody.

Dorset Police has installed a new camera in Banks Road, just after the Sandbanks Hotel going towards the chain ferry, as part of a new trial.

The new device will be used not to catch speeders on the peninsula but instead to test the quality of the cameras going forward.

A spokeswoman for Dorset Police said: “The AI cameras at Sandbanks are part of a trial to find the best technical solution to assist in our aim of detecting and prosecuting ultra-high speeders who are putting themselves and others at risk on our roads.

“At this stage it is a process testing exercise, i.e. reviewing the quality of the images, how best to download that data, how best to process that data etc.

“No other action has been taken with that data to date. We will continue trials in various locations with the aim of selecting the best solution to this issue.”

Deputy BCP Council leader Millie Earl added: “The newly installed cameras on Banks Road in Sandbanks are part of a trial being undertaken by Dorset Police, in partnership with BCP Council, to test new technology which will help us tackle speeding motorists in the area.”

Speeding has become notorious in the area, particularly in the summer evenings when car meets will gather.

Last summer, five cars were pulled over and dealt with for driving at high speeds in Banks Road and Shore Road – including one driver hitting 63mph in what is a 30mph zone.
